Reports of his death have begun circulating.
I’ll provide a solid link when I have one.

His big idea to exile the Doctor to Earth shaped my whole view of 'Doctor Who' from the first story I saw and his choice (with Peter Bryant) of Jon Pertwee was inspired.
Others grew up with the Doctor as a lonely wanderer in the Fourth Dimension; I grew up with him as a dashing (and very English) gentleman zooming around in 'Bessie' and bantering with his human 'family' from his home in the UNIT lab.
I know that there are many (even some few on this enlightened forum! ) who don't like the Pertwee Doctor or UNIT or that era; to me they were perfect in 1971 and they still are today.
Thank you Mr. Sherwin.

In a franchise that has no shortage of important voices through its history, he was without a doubt one of the most important. Thank you Derrick Sherman.

So, I'm on Reeltime Pictures's Vimeo page, about to purchase Return to Devil's End and I've stumbled across the Myth Makers entry for Derrick Sherwin. I clicked on the trailer and apparently, he was so miffed about the show's cancellation that he wrote to the BBC Controller and Head of Enterprises with an offer to purchase Who. He'd produce it for free in exchange for the international distribution rights. Not only did he bring us some of the most memorable Troughton stories and help the show take that fateful step from monochrome warzones to colourful countryside, he also still kept championing it long after his departure. As a legacy, that's rather splendid.

I think Derrick Sherwin is someone who was overlooked in the big picture of the show's history, due to his role as first script editor, then taking the reins as Peter Bryant exited stage left as the programme seemed to be on a run-out and facing possible cancellation.
His contribution in terms of ideas have variously been attributed to Douglas Camfield (Unit) and Terrence Dicks (Timelords) though i suspect a collective heads together produced such icons. The point is, his name seemed to get left out in the anecdotal history of the show and seemed regarded as a short term, in-between Producer, at least in my readings of the show's history. I am glad that more thorough research from the likes of Andrew Pixley have shed more insight into this period.
Invasion, Web of Fear, Mind Robber part 1, War Games, Spearhead from Space - Exile to Earth with the Brigadier and Unit, Jon Pertwee as the Doctor.
What a legacy.
