Very underrated I feel. A brilliant comic actress & her career basically chronicles the history of UK comedy.

Hello again.
It is with sadness that I have learned that June Whitfield has died at the age of 93.
She worked with a huge variety of comedians from Tony Hancock to Jennifer Saunders. Willing to be a supporting actor rather than the lead, she was a master of comic timing and creating memorable characters.
From Carry On films through suburban sitcom Terry and June to her scene-stealing turn as Gran in Absolutely Fabulous, she was a reliable, entertaining presence. She made more than 1300 performances in TV and radio.
She was a regular actor on radio. My favourite topical comedy before Have I Got News For You or the Now Show was The News Huddlines with Roy Hudd where she was the resident Margaret Thatcher impersonator! More recently, she played Miss Marple on Radio 4.
Our thoughts are with her family and friends.

She was a terrific actress. I always tended to think of her as the foil to great comics but the more you look at her work, the more you realise just how good an actress she was. She just happened to be exceptionally gifted at comedy, which is why pretty much every writer and performer wanted her on the show. But she was a really good dramatic actress too. She could be scary and menacing as well as lovely and dotty, and that's the sign of a great performer. She really is irreplaceable.

Hello again,
Quite right! She was terrifying in ITV's Marple story The Pricking of my Thumbs. Very sinister. Also excellent as Jane Marple in the BBC Radio 4 adaptations.

Maybe when I don't have a sleeping baby in my lap. I'm computerizing one-handed. Or if another mod gets to it first.
