When and how did you first learn 'wait, there are others out there who are just as into this or that as me and I can communicate with them and share stuff'?

I’m estimating here, but I would guess around 1999 or so; when I was about 14.

1981- all our primary school mates were Who mad. My twin brother and I grew our once curly black hair out like Tom's and we had maroon/brownish dressing gowns, so we were cosplaying back then HAHA

In the late 1970s I discovered there was comic fandom through blurbs for fanzines and comic conventions, and about six or seven years ago I discovered there was Dark Shadows fandom when I started Googling for all things Dark Shadows. If there is Who fandom out there, perhaps it would be better if I don't find out about it. ;-) 1981- all our primary school mates were Who mad. My twin brother and I grew our once curly black hair out like Tom's and we had maroon/brownish dressing gowns, so we were cosplaying back then HAHA Aha! I always wondered why I got that curly perm that somehow seemed to go so well with the preposterously long scarf. Now I have a new answer for those "How has Doctor Who influenced you?" threads. :-)

I grew up in Brighton and in the 1970s a science fiction shop opened up called Vortex Books. I ended up working there and am still friends with the owner forty years or more later! That got me into playing D&D and going to conventions. My first convention was the 1979 Worldcon held in Brighton so nice and easy to get to! In 1980 I went to Glasgow for a HHGTTG convention called Hitchercon and in 1983 went to Longleat! Those were the days!

I joined the official German Star Trek fanclub when I was 15. And had my mum make me a science officer uniform (she is a tailor). Attended my first convention as soon as I had my own car with 18.
