Another day, another project featuring multiple Masters... And Alex Macqueen's incarnation is nowhere to be seen. I really love the Macqueen Master - he's suave, a little bit slimy, and deliciously evil. He filled in a great blank for Big Finish long before the likes of Gomez, Roberts and Jacobi were touching the role on audio. And now it feels like BF has tossed him aside because suddenly they've got new and shinier toys to play with (Two of whom they've had to do some convoluted headflips with what we saw on screen in order to accommodate).
Am I the only one genuinely a bit put out by this? Has there been anything to suggest a return is on the horizon?

Do we know he wants to return, or that he does but there's schedule issues? He's never off TV, radio and voiceovers so I wouldn't be surprised if he's a hard guy to pin down.
All things being equal, yes, I'd far prefer him to be involved as he's a very solid link between the classic series and new series style of Master.

It does seem a bit odd that in a year with so much of the Master his incarnation has been totally absent.

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that they have tossed him aside, however it does bother me that in this 20th Anniversary of Doctor Who at Big Finish the first (and best) purely BF Master is no where to be seen. And so many opportunities so far this year. Yes, it does bother me a lot.

It does seem a bit odd that in a year with so much of the Master his incarnation has been totally absent. Very. I mean, if it's just been a matter of not being able to coordinate schedules / his having enough free time to come in for a few days, then well, unfortunate, but it is what it is. Sometimes reality doesn't get along with the fantasy worlds we'd like to see. This was (loosely) addressed in one of the podcasts not too long ago - maybe a month or two back? One of the emails they read out had someone asking about Macqueen's Master being absent. Nick dithered a little bit but did end up saying something like they should give him a call.

Well... I like him, too and I would welcome his return...
I don't know, maybe he gets a surprise appearance? If we are lucky? I really hope we do get a few surprises in some of the anniversary releases!

As much as people are having conspiracy theories about where he went, ultimately it probably isn't a big deal. He's popular, the cast/crew always rave about him, and he's happy to work. I think it needs to be considered that even just a couple years ago to the multi-Master trilogy.....the only Masters there was was Beevers and MacQueen. Now we have Jacobi, Gomez, Roberts, and then even Dreyfus as a Master to go against the early Doctors. In marketing terms, having the TV Masters is a far bigger, and easier sell. I mean....look how popular they are. Jacobi is insanely popular, as is Gomez. Just as popular as MacQueen I'd say. And throw in Roberts who certainly has the niche appeal of "First time returning" and "FIrst reunion with McGann" and yeah, they seem logical choices. You have a choice of popular Masters....so get the ones that are more likely to sell on top of their popularity. On top of that, you have Beevers who's been with BF for over a decade, so he has that appeal as being their recurring Master.
As much as people are worried about MacQueen, I think they're missing the logical answer which is: They have plenty of Masters to choose from nowadays. In saying that I do agree, I'd love MacQueen to return and it'll be nice to see more of BF's original Master. Though don't forget, with Dreyfus it's not like they've forgotten BF's original Masters either.

I almost forget how few releases Alex's Master has actually been in. What is it? The Dark Eyes range, the Two Masters trilogy. Dominion and that's it, I think. I'd like to have him in more because I think he is terrific but at the same time I appreciate not having him overused. I dare say if BF didn't have the New Series licence or if Jacobi or Gomez didn't fancy the gig then Alex may have been in more. We've certainly come a long way since having to use "Crispy Master" or nothing. Culshaw does a mean Ainley too, maybe that Master can be next giving even more depth to the pool.

Culshaw does a mean Ainley too Ooh, I've not heard that. Is there something on Youtube or somewhere we could hear him?

Me neither. However, I wonder about the Ainley estate allowing it. I seem to recall the Ainley was approached while he was still alive by BF and was willing, but at a price way over the BF budget, and I wonder if that might continue now.
Also, I wonder if BF might be hesitant to have Culshaw do too many "cover versions"
I'd still like to hear more from that incarnation on audio, if possible.
But this thread is supposed to be about MacQueen, and as mentioned above, maybe his limited appearances contribute to fans' (like myself) appreciation for his performance in the role. That does not in any way mean that I don't want more from that Master!

I think, more likely than not, it is simply yet another case of Big Finish being so enraptured by their new toys that they neglect some of the old favorites for a bit. And they have had a lot of new Masters to play with lately. Mix that in with your standard scheduling issues, and probably Big Finish not wanting to completely saturate the market with Master stories and have them risk competing with each other, and we've ended up where we are.
Personally though, I'd still love another Masters set with River Song, this time using McQueen, Dreyfuss, Simm, and Gatiss (or Sam Kisgart, if he's not available). If only.

Someone asked in this month’s Vortex about the seeming absence of Macqueen and Dreyfus’ incarnations, Nick Briggs’ response: ‘All good questions, Sam. Spoiler alert if I answered, though!’

Personally that just goes along with my theory that Dreyfus is in Legacy.

I have no emotional attachment to the Dreyfus Master. He's only been in one released story so far and while I thought he did a good job he didn't blow me away. But McQueen! I've loved him since I first heard him. Hopefully we'll be hearing from him soon.

He looked relatively busy in 2018 and so far in 2019, so maybe timing is the biggest part of it. Of colurse, if Nick says "spoilers' then maybe they did manage to squeeze some time. www.imdb.com/name/nm1276507/
