my 90 year old mom just finished book 7.
growing up my mom devoured harlequin and regency romance books. in those days paperbacks were pretty thin. she read a book and half a day. she always told me that someone had given her a box of science fiction books and she like them. when this was i have no clue so before my time. but at one point the terminator with arnold was her favorite movie.
then she read ender's game when a bunch of us in the family were passing it around. she has also read the martian and jurrasic park. but thats as sci fi as she got.
so my mom's eyesight is well she cant see enough to read anymore so she switched to audiobooks. so she asked me to pick out some science fiction audios. then she said "no heinlein" so the obvious thought popped into my head "how do you like science fiction and not like heinlein?" then she cut me to the bone " i hated stranger in a strange land."
my second favorite bookof all time. so now i am thinking my job is impossible but i went ahead.
so there is an audiobook on youtube called warship by joshua dalzelle. and it "reads" like a summer blockbuster movie. some good world building, just enough characterization,
and a plot like a rollercoaster. slow up that first hill then a wild ride from then on. and the readert is good. i figured she'd like that abd she did. so she finished the first trilogy called the black fleet trilogy.
so i had also listened to the first 6 expanse books on youtube. and again another really good reader for another space opera so i thought i try it with her.
i was worried though where the black fleet was sci fi the expanse was science fiction if you know what i mean. also its very woke. and i wasn't sure how she would handle that.
so i got book 1 for her on audible and she has an alexa so she was good to go. at first i couldn't tell whether she liked it and she was just sticking with it to humor me. when i asked her if she liked she said she liked miller. so one night she opens my door and yells down "I HATE HOLDEN!!!" but by then she was hooked.
and she kept listening she even passed me and got to and thru book7. as soon as she started book 7 she told me to order book 8 tiamat's wrath
her favorite is bobbi. i have to tried to get her on the Chrisjen Avasarala train but i couldnt. she likes them all now, even holden.
i have to see if she wants to listen the novellas. i think she will want to hear the churn its about teenage amos
also strange dogs is interesting its about loconia. one of the colonized worlds.
i am listening to tiamat's wrath as i write this and there is a part of between naomi and alex that just made me chock up
anyway cant wait for the new season and unfortunately next season will be the last.
