While everyone is of course perfectly entitled to have an opinion on this (I've certainly expressed my enthusiasm for the possibilities of storytelling on another thread), I'm going to reserve final judgement on whether I buy it or not for when we know a bit more than just two lines on an actor's CV on Spotlight.

Do I look as if I was not cheery?
Don't say anything wrong now.

It hasn't even been officially announced, has it?
I, for one, AM looking forward to it. I actually love Martha, and I think out of all the modern companions she is the most capable of being a hero on her own, without the Doctor around. I think stories about her lost year would be wonderful.

BF continuing to fill any gap in the show. Yes. Isn't it great? Oh, you're not here any more.
I always thought of Martha as a really lovely charcter. Although I preferred Rose, mainly because of Billie Piper, I think Martha was far nicer. She had an unrequited crush on The Doctor, which was interesting as I don't think such a thing has been explored before or after. But she recovered from the knockback in a dignified way and went onto become strong and interesting in her own right. Plus, Freema's performance is always very likeable. So - even though this hasn't been officially announced yet, I'm very interested in what direction Big Finish take old Jonesy.

I love Martha, she’s one of my favourite companions. I loved the sheer amount of expanded universe material she was involved in at the time; plenty of books and two runs of comics.
I’m happy to see that Freema has reprised the role for her own Big Finish set. I think there’s plenty of scope for stories from her during The Year That Never Was, where Martha stands on her own two feet and rebels against the Master, telling tales of the Doctor. It might not have happened for the Earth in the end, but it very much did happen for Martha, her family, the Doctor and Jack.
I understand the comparisons to The Dimension Cannon. That set had four cracking stories, but I think it slightly stumbled at not leading into Turn Left / The Stolen Earth because each story followed the same beats because that’s the premise of Rose’s mission.
I think Martha’s year is different in that she can have standalone stories about her fights against the Master’s reign, which would have been inspired by the Doctor, and she can also travel the world and tell stories of previous adventures she’s had with the Doctor. There’s scope there from a story standpoint, but also from a narrative one where the set can use different framing devices.
I’m certainly looking forward to the official announcement. I need to get round to listening to Dissected!

So if it is the year that never was do you think that will give the writers of this carte blanch to destroy landmarks and kill known characters? For example Osgood and Kate weren’t introduced to the Doctor until later, but could they appear in this?

I wonder if they got John Simm to record a few lines so that Harold Saxon's presence can be a constant in this dark version of the timeline.

For some reason I hadn't thought UNIT could be involved, but it's an obvious choice now I think about it. And of course we could see What Kate and Osgood et al were doing during the era of Colonel Mace and Captain Magambo.

We Still haven't gotten an official announcement yet Well I guess there are two possibilities that I can think of 1 They haven’t got enough of it recorded to make the announcement. Big Finish often say they don’t like to announce until it is “in the can” 2 They have decided to rewrite / re-record. Either because someone like John Simms is now available or there were elements in the story that they now consider controversial. And then there is very likely the third option, which I cannot think of, but is probably the real reason.

It's not unusual to have a long gap between recording and announcement.

I genuinely don't know why people are acting as if there's a big conspiracy going on regarding the announcement. We've had releases that we've known that have been recorded not been announced for YEARS! (And I'm not even talking about Tom Baker stuff). We'll get the announcement when we get the announcement. I'll imagine, being a returning companion, it'll be in DWM. No conspiracy, just saving it.

All that’s happened is it was mentioned it hasn’t been announced yet - which it hasn’t - and possibilities for that were offered. You saying you think it’ll be announced in DWM is no different to the posts above yours, or indeed me speculating it was going to be announced a couple of weeks back when The Sound of Drums & Last of the Time Lords had their anniversaries. People are just looking forward to the announcement and getting their pre-orders in.

I mean for example, these are two reasons: we already know the sets been recorded, and to assume that there's somehow a magically awful controversial story does feel somewhat conspiratorial. By the same metric, has The Storm of the Sea Devils not been announced because we think it's controversial? It just seems bit silly to assume that there's particular reasons as to why it's not announced when really...the reason it's not announced is because, for whatever reasons, BF are holding the date back, much like they've done across many, many productions. And then, and it's primarily on this forum which seems to attract a larger amount of whingers, we've got all this back and forth on why it hasn't been delayed, trying to look into it and find reasons that ain't there when the speculation is arguably aimless because the reason is simple: They're holding it back for marketing reasons. And then when it's finally announced, I expect there'll be moaning because there's a twitter countdown and people will complain that we don't know about this release yet etc. This site is so bloody tiring sometimes.
