I liked this a lot more now than when I first heard it, although I'm not sure why. I didn't really "get" Karen's character and didn't believe her story arc, although that didn't seem a problem for me this time. It's a great set of audios, almost at great as my idea of a BF masterpiece: Dalek Empire. Even using a lot of the the same actors, as Nick tends to do. I adore Barnaby Edwards in this one, the man can do anything.

I always thought BF's Cyberman series was very underrated, much like Dalek Empire, they were great stories with great characters. I think some people just couldn't get in to the no Doctor thing. I still consider the first Cyberman series and the original Dalek Empire series some of the best stuff that Nick has ever written though... everybody should listen to them.

It is some of the best stuff Nick has ever written. What ever happened to Sarah Mowat? She did this and Dalek Empire and I'm not sure what else. Nick loved her in these.

As someone that loved Dalek Empire, I was excited for Cyberman and surprised that it took me a little while to get into. Having the same actors play the leads took a little imagination on my part to get around, as did the doubling-up of actors in multiple roles. One actor in particular played a few too many for my ears, which was distracting for me. I think David Tennant even managed a cameo in the first episode, right around the time when that suddenly became a very big deal. I remember that the first episode (and possibly the second?) was recorded "live" by the cast with sound effects played in. I don't know if that made a difference for the end result, but it was an interesting experiment all the same. The plot moved at a different pace than Dalek Empire - not a bad thing, but it took a few tries for me to lock with the rhythm and tone of the piece (which was very cold; Dalek Empire had more moments of heart), I really got into it but was let down by the incredibly bleak ending.
Then Cyberman 2 arrived (I think it was the first box set?) and WOW it was so much more engaging and accessible. I *loved* everything about it from the incredible Fool Circle soundtrack to the stronger balance of action and shadowy Cyberman scheming to the overall pacing. Great new characters as well and I loved grounding the series with a new lead (Hazel) who gets pulled into the larger plot. You could listen to it on its own and follow along with no problem. I also appreciated that it ends on a somewhat more hopeful note. I wish it got more attention than it did.
Seriously, that soundtrack. Check this out:

I didn't notice Tennant. I'm going to have to listen again. Yeah, I love that idea that they did it live. I was trying to hear a difference in how it was done, but I couldn't. I agree with you about the pacing and that it was more difficult to get into that DE. I think that was my problem the first time I listened to it also. I was expecting something more similar to Dalek Empire so I was thrown when it was nothing at all like it.

He's the frantic Delta trooper sending the Mayday call.

One of the best things I’ve heard from Big Finish.
The first series is very good and then the second builds on that spectacularly. The Cybermen get the material they deserve and the way they’re simply logically persuaded to leave is almost chilling. Here they can’t be beaten, at best reasoned with and only then in their own cold logical terms. The characters are very well built up and have some really nice arcs.
The monologue style is what really sets this series apart from other full-cast spin offs, and it works really well. It’s very fitting that in a story all about loss of emotions we get more direct insight into the characters’ feelings than usual, and pays off well throughout the series.
