such a great beginning to our duo finding themselves in the wrong period. I love Sackers detective narration.Jago under the TLV Spotlight and Litefoot within his book shop.I guess all credit goes not just to the writer of Talons but definitely the casting director of the show who brought these two actors together... From the moment the very reimagined sixties style theme tune to the remeeting of our favourite barmaid to ancestral recognition this kicks off series 5 in a wonderful way
I really enjoyed the sensible attitude of J and L towards romanticising Victorian times and Victorian values as men who had been displaced from their own time but not so that they do not recognise its failings yes they may want to go back but not that they cannot show appreciation for what had been achieved and also lost.

Must admit I never thought Simon Dee of all people would be referenced or at least lampooned in Doctor Who. Even if it’s in just a spin off. Even though I know he was rather notable in his day I thought he had rather been forgotten now.

I think his cameo appearance in The Italian Job gave him an extended pop culture reference to remind people how big he once was. I recall from my parents recollections was that he went a bit Clive Anderson with his guests, which viewers like them were put off by. Jonathan Ross & Graham Norton demonstrated that you need the guests too be in on the joke, otherwise it comes across as arrogance and sarcasm, which Simon Dee unfortunately became known for.

Probably doesn’t help that barely any of his material from his live shows exists anymore. From what I’ve read though, it certainly didn’t do his career any favours in the end. Pride cometh before a fall and all that. Back to the release though, I thought it was a genius move to have Jago and Litefoot moved to the swinging ‘60s. Feel like if Big Finish had done such a move now they definitely would have tied it in to the First Doctor’s tenure on Earth.
