Thoughts?
For myself I didn't hate it but it was no means a standout EP.
It was 50 minutes of mindless romp ending with 7 minutes of class.
Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston deserve every penny they make from DW.

I liked it, and the end was, indeed, class

I thought the opening 45 minutes was excruciatingly bad. I'm all for a romp - Robot Of Sherwood is a fave of mine - but this wasn't. It was dull, infantile nonsense. Greg Davies and Matt Lucas were two of the worst guest actors we've had in years.
Then the last 10-15 minutes...it was like a new episode all of a sudden. You could almost see the relief on Capaldi's face that he had something to sink his teeth into.
SO, very mixed from me. Also a bit miffed there was NOTHING to link us to Series 10. Last year we got a title announcement at least.

I loved that for the most part it was a knockabout screwball comedy of sorts. Lighter than previous xmas specials, which we needed and the ending was perfect. Also who didnt laugh at the baubles instead of planets in the title sequence

The best gag was the "Carol singers will be criticised" sign on the TARDIS door. Were the holographic antlers a way the TARDIS was telling the Doctor to lighten up?
The last bit with the restaurant by the singing towers was the best bit, it felt like the Twelfth Doctor was finally shaking off his Eleventh incarnation by taking the River Song arc full circle (it'll be interesting watching this, then the Library two-parter). Now he's moved on from both Clara and River Song, he has the freedom to truly come into his own.

What an odd bird this Christmas special was. Loved Capaldi. His being the companion entering the TARDIS was brilliant. Perfect. I really liked everything on the crusier. I loved everything on the planet. Everything in the first half of the episode.....eh.

It was a fun episode. Not amazing but very entertaining. I also think the last 10 min or so was terrific. And I did go and watch Silence Of The Library. It always seems like a very different story every time we learn something new about River. The meaning os her scenes between her and The Doctor constantly change slightly, which I just love. Tomorrow it's Forest Of The Dead.

I wonder who was the first to come up with the sonic trowel, Big Finish or Moffat, given that it appears in both stories that came out on the same day. Either they came up with it independently, Moffat included it in "Husbands..." after reading the script for the audio (since I believe the audio was produced before the TV episode), or it was suggested to Big Finish by Moffat.

As far as Christmas specials go, I'd say this is one of the better ones. Highly entertaining all around and it had me laughing more often than not. I don't think it was one of the all-time-great episodes, but easily one I'll revisit a few times in the future.

And the timing probably means that Big Finish's new box set is likely to be one of their biggest sellers ever.

Positive. - Peter Capaldi & Alex Kingston shared a great chemistry. - The Coldtiz Big Finish reference. - The final 5 minutes was excellent & ties River's arc up.
Negative. - Matt Lucas character was pointless & annoying. - Greg Davis gives Graham Crowden in Horns Of Nimon a run for his money in bad acting. - Pantomime acting mostly throughout. - Wafer thin plot? - No drama or tension to the story. - Very silly in parts. - Silly Power Ranger robot.
Overall i rate it 5/10 but that's mostly for the last 5 minutes.

Positive. - The Coldtiz Big Finish reference. I missed that. What was it? About the Tardis doors not shutting if someone holding on to them like Kurtz did in Colditz.

I really liked the banter between Capaldi and Kingston, and think that the people who objected to the first 40 minutes of the story would probably enjoy it a lot more just listening to it with their eyes closed. It was really nice to see River wrong-footed for a change.
And the possibilities for The Diary of River Song are opened up considerably if River can just "borrow" the TARDIS from time to time without the Doctor knowing.

I really liked it. Inventive, over the top, and pathos based in character relationships. It's nice to actually "see" The Doctor and River be in a loving relationship instead of just "hearing" about how much they love eachother. Capaldi and Kingston were great together.
As a result, the ending was actually quite sweet, the episode generally had the strongest portrayal of River since her début, and its actually got me quite eager to liste to the Secret Diary of River Song Box-set.
