Is it bad that I've been put off pre-ordering 'The Ark' today (as I got bad) due to the, somewhat rightful, backlash to the 'Genesis' release?

melkur - Considering the comments on this thread in the past week I'd say erring on the side of caution is probably a wise move on your part.

In the case of the Ark its a Full Cast full version of the Script no one knew existed where any adaptations that have been made are for audio its practically a completely new story. EDIT As Lost Stories Sales are quite common waiting for one makes seems too. Regards mark687

I went into this one thinking it would be a full cast audio with some here and there narration. Instead with its abundant narration it felt more like an *audiobook* with some bonus sound effects and dropped in live action sequence dialogue by the cast. Because of the skip ahead advancement of the story within the narration. The full cast voiced bits seemed to be at times jarringly applied to the accompanying scenes. There's not much fluent scene continuity where the performers could properly bond in a natural real time environment. This contributed to most of the actors coming across as hollow sounding. Not your usual full cast drama from Big Finish - it's quite a hybrid.

Not sure why this comment got likes when it's a link to a review of The War Doctor Begins – Comrades in Arms NOT Genesis of Terror.

Is it just me or does Tom sound weirdly different? I'm only several minutes in. I was listening as a I did a weights workout in the basement, and I distinctly thought "wait... did they ask Culshaw to voice Tom for some reason?" No, looking at the cast it's definitely Tom. But he doesn't sound like in other BF recordings either recently released or released some time ago.
I suppose I've had insomnia for the last two nights so maybe my head is just screwy.

That is not particularly promising for the rest of my listen-through.

Tom recorded both Lost Stories just about 2 years ago where as the 4th Doctor set coming out this month was recorded from 2018 to 2020. I’d be curious to listen to a comparison. it is possible time is catching up with his voice.

So yes, Tom does sound slightly more hoarse in this production ... as he also did in PHP 4. It is known that when Briggs is directing, he does some kind of smoothing over of Tom's voice to make it sound more youthful. Perhaps the other Big Finish directors of Tom are not as focussed on the filtering of the 4th Doctor's voice.

I don’t know if that was a Briggs thing or whoever is doing the edit. Or indeed if it is a trick they still employ.

If this was, as the evidence suggests, a special feature that ended up getting put out on its own, there might have been less editing of Tom than usual.

This is a much more worthwhile entry then last months. The Central threat virtually completely new, couple of really good pieces, Sarah and Harry well rounded and useful to the plot (also possible the most relaxed I've heard Sadie Miller and Chris Naylor in their Roles.)
Now to turn to BFs own odd warning The Doctor is not played like the Doctor on the TV EP. Not quite true I think its written as for the 1st or maybe the 3rd and Tom Baker's performed an amalgamation of the 2 and added a dash of Tom Baker.
Technical wise The Ark would've been very difficult to do on TV though overall I think its a better story
4/5
