Is this the first such thing the franchise has done? They've done audiobooks, and "Spock vs Q" which seems to be a stage show released on CD, but a full drama?

Yeah, to my knowledge, these are the first official audio dramas. There are plenty of fan works and inofficial ones.
Yes, Spock vs. Q is a stage play. I was lucky enough to actually see Nimoy and DeLancie perform it live on stage. It was AWESOME.

Perhaps they should reach out to a certain established audio drama company and see if they're interested in producing more...

I would love to see the TV show it is based on - 3mb download isn't enough for streaming even if my budget stretched to all these extra subscription fees for this and that, assuming Netflix still have the rights to it worldwide after CBS/Paramount's own streaming channel.

Star Trek was withdrawn from Netflix, I think. "Picard" was on Amazon Prime in the UK, anyway, and they seem to be expecting to show s2 as well. But it must be stressed that Picard isn't very good. Chris Chibnall would improve it considerably.

As for Chibnall improving it, each to their own and all that ... but I hope he stays well away from it!

This made me laugh as a selling point.
"From transporters and other ship technologies to weapons, explosions, and more, listeners will hear actual sound effects from the aural Picard universe."
There's a lot of audio drama being made in the US now (after 50+ years of pretty much nothing) but they still to find it very hard to describe for some reason. "Scripted Podcast" being the worst.

It’s strange, isn’t it? Hard to believe it’s the same place which once experienced the Golden Age of Radio. Maybe it’s just due to different cultural sensibilities? Over this side of the pond, radio and audio drama never seemed to go away.

The benefits of having a completely national broadcaster who isn't having to cater for advertisers, I hope. Worth the TV license fee / subscription alone as far as I'm concerned.

I liked Picard, however I did think it should have just been a movie. It did feel stretched and slow at points. If someone could edit it into a movie I think it’s reputation would improve. Does Chibnall have any background in editing?

Well, someone gets pissy when another person dares to hold a different opinion. And you know this board is really starting to be an unpleasant place with people being quick to attack others. Even though a great deal of my time is spent working with writers developing original plays and I could go through every episode of Picard and break down the flaws in its scripting, despite all that I have respect for your opinion, even if I disagree with it, and would not presume to go after you because you hold a different subjective opinion. I walked into Picard wanting to like it and still hope that season 2 features better storytelling.

While I agree that Picard was not as good as hoped or as it could have been, I also do not think it is as bad as some people make it out to be. I felt entertained. Yes, the finale ..... had a lot of room for improvement. But there were also some genuinely great scenes.

Love it or hate it we should be able to express our opinions without being insulted and/or attacked. I liked the Riker/Troi episode a lot but man, the first three episodes could easily been cut down to 80 or 90 minutes. Picard in that ridiculous beret and that panto French accent? Really? Or how about Jurati murdering her mentor/lover and it being almost completely ignored by season”s end? Rafi is the most underwritten and most annoying Trek character in its history. If I never hear her refer to Jean-Luc as JL again it will be too soon. I could go on & on. The show’s writing was just so sloppy. It looked great though.
