The red (or silver, as it were) headed child of season 12; the black sheep; the damp squib in a series of, practically, non-stop bullseyes. It has the gold, the two-for-one Vogan-Gallifrey symbol, the endless caves and, of course, a mincing Cyberleader with hands firmly on hips.
But even with all of that, even with its place between two major and better Cyber stories, is there something worthwhile here? Excellent, even?

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I’ve never minded Revenge. Aside from the rubbish costuming of the Cybermen and the ordinary effect (not enough budget to go for special) that is Voga in the climax it’s a pretty good story. It’s real problem is that it sits between Genesis and Zygons.

It’s sort of a Lichorish All Sort, there’s a lot of different parts that alone are sort of fine but each part really needs to be part of a different recipe and together they’re a weird mix. It has some good parts, some nice tension. Some lovely caves. I’m a sucker for monsters in the real world so Cybermen stomping around caves was nice. Tom appears to have found his feet.

Its OK. I hate the "kill em with gold" aspect, it is just nonsense but I like the quirky parts, the bubbles etc. And Kevin Stoney is in it. ANY project is better with some Stoney. Its not Mavic Chen or Tobias "Paaaackeeeeer" Vaughan but it'll do. Wraps up the arc a bit fast but that they even had an arc was quite impressive this early. Tom has more of a handle on his Doctor by this point too.
As Mr Banks says if it was not between two titans it would not stand out so much. And it was the first ever DW on home video so a lot of nostalgia points there. 160/241 on the last major DWM poll. Between Battlefield and Planet Of Fire. Seems fair placement for this. Lower third-ish but not near the bottom.

Tom appears to have found his feet. Just curious, why do you think so?

I don't think Revenge of the Cybermen was that bad... sure, it's not perfect but I quite liked it. As a kid it was an episode during a strong season for Doctor Who; Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans... In hindsight we can pick apart these stories and find faults, but even now I still think Revenge of the Cybermen is a good story.

Tom appears to have found his feet. Just curious, why do you think so? I tend to associate “Doctor Tom” as being, in a sense, nightmare fuel retardant. He’s not just flip in the face of monstrousness but you get a sense that he can back up that attitude. I tend to use the phrase “weaponised compassion” when talking about the thirteenth Doctor, but for the fourth it’s a sense of “weaponised ridiculousness”. There’s a sense here, that is missing in Genesis but is present in Ark, that even though things are bad the Doctor’s got the ability to get them under control, and that comes from the confidence Tom generates through his performance. He’s more established as the quintessential Tombo Doctor here.

It’s not bad but it’s not great It’s just mediocre in a season of beloved and memorable episodes

Very much the best Sontaran of the classic era for me.

I quite like Revenge of the Cybermen. I only real gripe with the story was when the Doctor yelled “Harry Sullivan is an imbecile!” which I felt was rather horrible of him.

It’s alright. For some reason, I greatly prefer the Target novelisation than the actual episode.

I dunno, it must be a nostalgia thing but there's quite a few Doctor Who stories where I prefer the Target novel to the episode. Of course, before video arrived all we had was the Target novels so that was the only way we could enjoy some episodes!

Of course, before video arrived all we had was the Target novels so that was the only way we could enjoy some episodes! I must admit I’m much the same. Even if the television episodes are far superior, the novels can sometimes add that extra detail or more worldbuilding. The Ark and the Celestial Toymaker are perfect examples of this.
