It’s not a bad story, and I will admit it’s been a while since I saw it. My only real gripe is Sarah Jane’s departure which I liked initially but I don’t find great looking back on it.
You all will probably be better at discussing it than me.

The last 5 or so minutes obviously are some of the most powerful in Who, otherwise average story, which makes the end even better if you were going in cold cause there's no hint its coming.

The ending really hits you in the feels and it's worth watching just for that. As for the rest of the story it's one that I feel I should like more than I do. Though that could have more to do with the actors than the story itself.
Highs, Sarah Jane’s possession as it's really creepy. Along with female Eldrad who's costume is great and she makes for an interesting villain.
Lows, most of part 4 in particular male Eldrad.

Ok, maybe the story itself isn’t overrated, but I find Sarah Janes departure overrated.

Ok, maybe the story itself isn’t overrated, but I find Sarah Janes departure overrated. I dunno about overrated but the younger me was very sad when it happened... we didn't say WTF back in 1976, but it most definitely was a WTF moment!

Honestly yes. It’s quite a by the numbers Classic Who outing until the final scene which injects some last minute pathos.

Actually i think its underrated,i think it has good model work, great performances by the cast especially Sladen, the ending is underplayed but the sense of real love from the performers makes it quite touching. it really feels like the end of an era with the 4th doctor as he cuts the last tie to the Pertwee era in a way

Ok, maybe the story itself isn’t overrated, but I find Sarah Janes departure overrated. One of the things I love about classic who is how emotional the departures are, often by playing against the sadness. Jo Grant leaving was extremely sad, Susan's too had a lot of intentional impact. But Jamie and Zoe, for example, left under really tragic circumstances, and what does the Doctor do? He laughs when he sees Jamie back home on the view-screen. In Warriors Gate, Romana 2 runs all the way back to the TARDIS only to say "I'm not coming with you," and runs all the way back again. But I remember being gutted to see her go.
I think Sarah Jane's departure is a mix of the two. The realisation in her eyes when she realises the Doctor can't take her with him to Gallifrey, and then backtracking by saying she was only joking about leaving is heartbreaking, as is the Doctor's cursory "Until we meet again, Sarah." And off she walks with her little coat and silly flower in a pot - into the wrong location: the Doctor had even messed up dropping her off home! I think it's the perfect balance of genuine melancholy and silliness. Not played to break the heart like Doomsday, and not brushed aside like Leela in Invasion of Time. As a departure, I think it's pretty near to perfect.

They showed this on BBC4 as a tribute when Elizabeth Sladen died. I'd read the novelisation in hte past, but this was the first time I saw the actual tv version.
And it consisted of the characters wandering round and round in circles within a power station, with Sarah wingeing and sulking.
Awful choice.
