Seeing more and more jokes about him getting lines wrong, missing cues, fumbling about, 'Chatterton', but when you watch One stories, do you really ever notice him flubbing that often? And does it ever take you out of a story?

There’s a lot of little things to suggest that it’s more part of Hartnell’s performance than any actual forgetfulness on Bill’s part. Remmber, Hartnell was playing an old man, not a young time lord. I have heard it said that the Abbot of Amboise lacked any of the traditional Hartnell “fluffs” while the Doctor does, but I’ve not heard “The Massacre”, so can’t tell.

I remember hearing that some of it was actually scripted. I don't have a copy of the script, but think it was in Marinus?
