I'm going through a First Doctor phase, loving the classic episodes but would love to enjoy some of the original missing/bbc novels.
Could anyone recommend the best reads?
I've heard of Ten Little Aliens, The Time Travelers and The man in the velvet mask?

Castellan
You know, now that you mention it, I actually do rather like Attack of the Cybermen ...

The other 2 VNAs not mentioned yet, Sorceror's Apprentice and The Plotters are both fun romps. For BBC books, in addition to the above, Simon Guerrier's Time Travelers is good too.
Man in the Velvet Mask was not to my taste personally.

The only First Doctor I’ve read is Salvation but I can highly recommend it.

Seconded. I read Salvation 20+ years ago at the perfect time: as a teenager starting to ask himself difficult questions about the existence of a god and afterlife he’d been raised to believe in. I remember it vividly and fondly to this day.

I remember it vividly and fondly to this day. Is the First Doctor involved in the story much, I think I read somewhere he takes a back seat in Salvation. I might be thinking of another book. I'm always disappointed when reading a Doctor lite adventure. The Wheel of Ice was quite a slog, hopeing from chapter to chapter for more scenes with the 2nd Doctor. I don't mind scenes with companions but for my enjoyment the Doctor needs to carry 50% of the narrative.

"The Plotters" is very good (particularly when you consider it was a replacement for something else), but being by Gareth Roberts it may be off some fans' reading lists. "The Empire of Glass" is also great. They're both set in the same period, of course.

I've just ordered Empire of Glass but I'm not sure about buying anything else by Gareth Roberts, I've got a couple of his books already that I bought before I knew what an unpleasant individual he is, I don't think I'll read them again, just doesn't feel right.

I can fully recommend The Witch Hunters and The Time Travellers. There's something about the first Doctor era that lends itself very well to prose in my opinion. I have started to get back into the books this year and read a few that I have been wondering about for a while. Salvation is on that list and I might just give it a go next.
