Recently the writer has said he wouldn't change a thing about this episode.
It got me thinking, until the ridiculous egg reveal, Kill the Moon has all the ingredients to be damn good episode.
I love the idea of ageing astronauts and that humanity has lost interest in Space. Capaldi is great and the abandoned Moon base really creepy, the scene with the spider creature inside also great.
Does anyone else think the first half half is really good until the egg reveal.
It also got me thinking are there other episodes that were great until one thing spoiled them?

Apart from the fact it employed the great Tony Osoba and then gave him virtually nothing to do, I really like Kill the Moon. Honestly, for a show that boasts so many outrageous, celebrated plot points, I don't know why the egg reveal gets so many peoples' backs up.

I'm with Peter Harness - would't change it. Is it dumb? Yep - and in an era that was so austere and dark at the opening..the sheer glee of Capaldi's announcing what the Moon is? Is amazing. AND though it's 99.9999999999999% not an egg, there is still no scientific concensus on what the moon IS. That it used to be part of the same body of mass as Earth is the most popular current theory. Too silly for Who? Tell me again how many origins of the fake continent of Atlantis we've had?

I’m with Harness as well, it’s a solid episode. A bit of humour, some drama, Capaldi finding his “Doctor voice”… We’re only annoyed as fans because we have 50 years of established Who lore about the moon from “…and the Silurians” (which, really, Kill the Moon reinforces, there was no moon, the moon arrived and everything went to pot for the Silurians and the Mondasians).

I think series 8 as a whole is massively underrated, as with any long running show, there are a couple of duds but on the whole a great transition from Smith era to Capaldi.
Apart from The Caretaker I can regularly rewatch all the episodes.
Back to Kill the Moon, I love 12s line about regenerating until they run out of bullets.

I love Kill the Moon, egg and all. People take it too seriously - Who has always had its silly moments and things that definitely aren’t based in science so not sure why people draw the line at the moon egg.

No the episode was pretty Terrible and one of the really bad Capaldi era episodes if it wasn’t for the following 2 episodes I’d pretty much skip Series 8

I loved Capaldi from the start, the journey the 12th Doctor went was on was brilliant, from Grumpy self doubt and deep reflection on his mistakes to his wonderful speech about kindness and making a stand in The Doctor Falls. Deep Breath 9/10 Into the Dalek 8/10 Robot of Sherwood 7/10 Listen 9/10 Time Heist 8/10 The Caretaker 4/10 Kill the Moon 8/10 Mummy on the Orient Express 10/10 Flatline 10/10 In the Forest of the Night 6/10 Dark Water 10/10 Death in Heaven 8/10

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Honestly, aside from the egg thing, it isn’t bad. And it has that lovely idea about a girl asking society what she should do then, after getting some information, doing what she thinks is right.

I can't help but think the world would be a better place if we were all guided by the moral message of Doctor Who.
Kindness, forgiveness, mercy and seeking non violent solutions where ever possible.

Bruh the show isn’t even consistent with the moral messaging and has done pretty messed up stuff especially in the EU and wilderness years

I'd definitely rank the Capaldi seasons above Series 1, 7, 11, 12 and 13. All of which are good. Season 9 had; The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar 10/10 (Anyone for dodgems?) Under the Lake/Before the Flood 9/10 (the cards for appropriate responses, just brilliant) The Zygon Invasion/Inversion 9/10 (that speech gives me goosebumps everytime) Heaven Sent 10/10 (what a tour de force) Season 10 The Pilot, Smile, Thin Ice, Pyramid at the End of the World, Empress of Mars all solid episodes. 8/10 Extremis, Oxygen, World Enough and Time and The Doctor Falls are just awesome. 10/10 As your not keen on the Capaldi era, what seasons are your favourite? Any personal highlights? I love almost all Doctor Who series, with the odd seasons I find below par, season 24 for example. It's really interesting how fans have different preferences.

Series 8 is probably mine too, I love all three Capaldi series but 8 has such a great tonal shift after series 7b.
I love the Matt Smith era but series 7b, although good, has a fair few average episodes with only Name of the Doctor feeling outstanding. Day of the Doctor was brilliant but Time of the Doctor felt like it needed more time explore all the lingering plot threads.
Series 8 brings us a new type of Doctor, darker, grumpier and more unpredictable.
12 is a Doctor that will save/stand up for you but doesn't suffer fools gladly and has no qualms about telling people how foolish they are. I love his pragmatism when dealing with the doomed, of course he cares but he's totally focused on saving who he can.
I love Dark Water, especially lines like "He believed the phrase was being spoken by the recently deceased (which leads to a great moment from the Doctor.) “Why? Was he an idiot?”
Also the moment earlier with the sleep patches " The Doctor: You betrayed me. You betrayed my trust, you betrayed our friendship, you betrayed everything I ever stood for. You let me down! Clara: Then why are you helping me? The Doctor: Why? Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?
Sorry another long winded post, but I love the 12th Doctor so much, for me the best Doctor of the revived era. We got the fresh magic with Tennant and some wonderful story arcs but my personal favourite 12 just pips 10.

It's been a while since I've seen it -- and I think I on,y ever watched it the one time -- but I remember liking it well enough. I didn't love it, but I don't remember being annoyed with it as I was with several other episodes of that general period.
I do recall thinking that the whole abortion metaphor thing was somehow both incredibly hamhanded and also weirdly undercooked.

I don't like it at all. I just don't believe any of it.
My daughter just did a watch through of all of modern Who and she couldn't get through the episode. I'm not sure she even made it to the egg.
