With our new, and potentially biggest, era about to debut, we can expect an influx of new eyes. If someone says they want to get into Who meantime, but maybe doesn't want to wait till Ncuti or just wants to test the waters elsewhere first, what would you tell them is the best place to start?
This isn't necessarily which era or Doctor is your favourite - this is about which is the best place to start, totally fresh and green.

Nu Who starting points
Series 1 9th Doctor/10th Doctor
Series 5 11th Doctor
Series 8 12th Doctor
Series 11 13th Doctor
Classic Who
Season 1 1st Doctor
Season 4.2 onwards 2nd Doctor
Season 7 3rd Doctor
Season 12 4th
Much as I love 80s Who, it's probably not the best place for newcomers to start unless you're looking to sample the best of the era only, so start with Kinda, Earthshock, Snakedance, Mawdryn Undead/Enlightenment, The Five Doctors and Caves of Androzani then maybe Vengeance on Varos or Revelation of the Daleks, then Remembrance of the Daleks, Greatest Show in the Galaxy and all of Season 26.

Frankly…. Have them Watch whichever one’s plot they think sounds interesting. Most of us started at utterly random spots (Day of the Daleks for me), everyone should.

I would argue -- very strongly and very passionately -- that such a thing does not exist. The show is simply too big and too diverse. Depending on the individual, certain eras might be more or less appealing (definitely guide any Douglass Adams fans along whichever route gets them to The Pirate Planet fastest, for example) but there's nothing even approaching an optimal entry point for most viewers. Just pick a new Doctor/Companion debut episode and dive in -- though even that's not really a requirement. All ya' really need is a good story. My first Doctor Who episode? Gridlock. I went into it with zero context, but still had a ton of fun, and Tennant nailed that ending scene so hard I just had to watch more.

The best answer, in my opinion, is to start with "Rose". RTD was smart about that first season. He gradually reintroduced the lore and concepts of Doctor Who to an audience with a large segment that undoubtedly had little knowledge of a show that had been off the air for quite some time. "Rose" combines that reintroduction with modern storytelling sensibilities. It makes for a perfect entry point for new viewers.

I used to think the best place would be with Rose, but then I had 2 different people watch it and think it was silly and cheesy and then stopped watching. Now I have a handful of episodes of each modern era Doctor, and I recommend them depending upon which one I think the person would like. Usually it's one of these: Dalek, The Eleventh Hour, Blink, Vincent and The Doctor.
