If he could do his time with Big Finish over again is there anything he would choose to do differently? To build on that, would he have pursued Tom Baker differently? Or at that period was Tom just not into them. To follow, what does he think changed with Tom and/or Nick’s approach? Also, does he think BF is hitting or has hit a point where the market is over saturated Doctor Who content? How does he feel about the new box set dynamic for telling stories? what is his solution to bringing on board next generation Doctors such as Smith, Capaldi & Whitaker? Is it time for another changing of the creative guard at BF towers? what next thing does he think BF should have a crack at to move beyond the standard Doctor Who fare BF is pushing out every month. Is there a high level property that he things BF could both afford and do major things with? thanks Gary. |

The convention is in less than two weeks. No Tim Treloar, he wasn't able to make it.
It seems that my interview with Gary will be the last of three. The first is a retrospective of all of his Who related work, and I'm assuming there will be at least a little about BF. The second will be regarding the creation and running of Audio Visuals. Again, I expect there will be at least a little discussion of how they went from AV to BF. Then Big Finish and I get a turn, on the last day of the con. I actually think this is a good thing. I get to watch his other interviews and get a sense of the things that he likes or does not like talking about. I get to hear what others have asked and either avoid the repeats or build on the answers he gives. I'm really excited for this and I hope I can engage him and get him to dig deep with some good BF history and information. It should be fun! And I'm still open to some questions if any of you have any!

I’d be curious to know how it was for him to come back to BF and write “Technicolor Nightmare Coat” and whether that was a one off favor to his former Jac Raynor or if he’s interested in doing more.
How has his love for Dr Who changed due to being “on the inside”? Can he view episodes still just as a fan or has his experience colored his view that watching feels different?

During Gary Russell's tenure I thought there was a lot of experimentation - not just the Divergent Universe, but messing with the format (Creatures of Beauty, Live24, Flip Flop etc.) leaning into other spin-off worlds (e.g. sidestepping with Benny or Iris or Frobisher) massive tonal shifts (e.g. between Holy Terror, The One Doctor, Spare Parts, etc.) plus very different companions like Evelyn, doing a two hander, doing a musical, etc.
I'd be interested to know:
- how difficult it was and how big a risk it was to be that bold
- whether the show coming back on TV changed that at all
- where he thinks there is the most boundary pushing now (e.g. the audios, on TV, or elsewhere?)

Very good interview
The "What If" ideas had he stayed especially THAT Spin Off Idea given RTD was thinking in the same vein.
Characters were created for Actors
The Character substitution in Other Lives nice to have confirmed
I'm glad he eventually admits the current way works even if its not his taste
