With this week's sale I've picked up series 3 and Friend of the Family, as I've read glowing reviews about them.
Which sets are the best of the rest? Are there any more 5 star sets?

I liked 7 and 9 best of those (though I don’t have 10 so haven’t calculated that one in)

My personal top 3 would be Series 7, New Recruit and Friend of the Family.
Two showcased the storytelling potential of the series (one of them beautifully...you'll soon find out!) without the usual reliance on the Doctor's back catalogue of characters, and while the third did dip in it did so in a way that not only worked well but offered up a partnership that deserved to be explored further.

Looking back over the range, it really is remarkably consistent. I found sets 1-5 particularly satisfying, each that little bit more than the sum of its parts.
If you’re limiting yourself to the all-time classics, I highly recommend volume two for the story Five Twenty-Nine alone. Years on I still find myself thinking about it out of the blue.
If you have any special fondness for Liz Shaw, New Recruit is a wonderful change of pace.
And while you have Friend of the Family, it’s worth repeating for anyone still on the fence: it really is that good.

Years on I still find myself thinking about it out of the blue. So very true. Possibly one of my favourite self-contained episodes ever, it hits hard even now. A story I can’t listen to too often, but I don’t think I’ll ever forget when thinking about the best of River Song or Big Finish.

I just noticed the third Captain Jack set is also in the sale. I’d like to make a case for this as a “must listen” River entry.
R&J is a very significant addition to River’s journey, brilliantly told; a love story between two people with absurdly complicated timelines, neither quite able to sync up with the other. A single hour that encompasses two entire lifetimes, celebrates two very different TV shows, and casts both characters in a new light.
It’s genuinely one of my favourite Big Finish episodes in any series. Beyond that, the box set is just a great and varied trio of stories. I went in blind on a friend’s recommendation, and not to oversell it, but it single-handedly made me fall in love with modern-day Big Finish and kickstarted this entire hobby/obsession. Your mileage may of course vary. :-)
