David Bradley opened the door, and we've done it plenty with BF, but what about bringing it back to screen - would recasting an old companion/supporting character from Classic Who in the new era be something you could roll with, or do you still feel there's some hard line left in TV vs audio? Say RTD wants to have Jago and Litefoot on the show and finds two actors who can pull it off - yay or nay?
Do you even perhaps think that a Doctor recast vs a companion recast carry different criteria?

I think it's different. There are many more companions to choose from and few have much of a need to come back. Those that have (or are) wouldn't be considered if the actors were gone. With The Doctor though, the character is the focus. It's the show so having the first(ish) Doctor coming back (especially with Bradley carrying goodwill from already playing Hartnell, and being a known face to even young audiences with Harry Potter) makes more sense from a story POV. There's something to do with him - as Moffat showed, which was really to give something to the 12th Doctor's story as he went. What, really, would there be for Romana I, the Brig, Katarina? While Sarah is too familiar with recent audiences to re-cast. You'd surely just...get another companion if you wanted to use one. Would a Susan return mean as much with a different actor? No. Romana? Maybe - for new stories.

With Timelord characters it would be really cool to do a recast via regeneration. It would be great to give Susan and Romana a Swansong episode and then see them regenerating into a new actress/actor.

I think if there’s a specific story that needs that companion, I’d be OK with it, but given there are so many companions who haven’t come back and whose actors are still around, it’d have to be very justified. The only companion (if we count him as one) I could imagine recasting for the show (other than Susan or Romana who don’t really count) is the Brigadier. Probably the only character whose role is unique enough you couldn’t substitute a living companion actor in his place and iconic enough that he would be worth bringing back even if played by another actor. Even then I’d hesitate unless there was a very good story.

I don't think it would work. What companions that are no longer with us are strong enough to warrant a recast in a story or to revisit at the age they were in the show with a recast actor? I think the point of bringing back old companions is to see them as they are now as they did in the unofficial 60th anniversary special, The Power of the Doctor.

My thinking was, I've really enjoyed getting new 1st, 2nd, 3rd Doctor stories via Big Finish recasts, and for those stories to be authentic, you need the era's companions.
I'd love new TV adventures featuring classic Doctors, recasting is fine with me, as long as the spirit of the original era is honoured, which Big Finish have done brilliantly.
The only Who character I can't imagine recast is the Fourth Doctor.
As I said earlier new regenerations of Romana and Susan would be really cool.

If I were running the show, I wouldn't even consider recasting any former companions. There's just too many companions that you can choose from that wouldn't need to be recast. If you want to use an older companion you've got tons of choices. We still haven't had Susan back on the main show. I'd be looking to do that before any recasts.

The question is, where's the need? We might want Fraser Hines, but are we so bothered by Jamie McCrimmon?
