What a day to be a Doctor Who fan! Even if I'm currently on The Web Planet in my current rewatch (I'll get through it...) - hundreds of Who content available on Iplayer, exciting teases from RTD about possible spin offs in the future and confirmation of at least four series in some kind of development!
But. What if you're a fan of those joyous Audio Dramas that are released every month. You'll probably be thinking "the River Song and War Doctor ranges are ending!?", "there's not much being said about future spin offs" and "2024 looks a bit quiet (save for the classic Who bundle)"...
So, what do you reckon is happening? And is the wider Whoniverse going to have a positive effect on Big Finish? Would love to hear what people think.

This seems like the biggest relaunch of Doctor Who on the television since 2005. I remember well that back then, Who's comeback actually had a detrimental effect on BF sales and interest at the time of 'Dreamtime.' Of course, BF has come a long way since then - and so has visual media, so I'm hoping for positive things.
In the sparkling new world of RTD2, is there still room for an increasingly crossover-obsessed universe of audio Doctor Who? Or would a more streamlined approach be what the Doctor ordered?

I’ve a feeling there'll be certain ranges / releases that tie in closer with the main show or its inevitable on screen spin-offs, which will come under “The Whoniverse”, essentially bringing Big Finish forward as concurrent with the series, rather than a tenure behind as they tend to be.
We may find that certain ranges wind down, or the involvement of characters is reduced, as they are used on screen, but I don’t think there’ll be a massive impact to Big Finish, at least not negatively. Anything negative to them will likely come as a result of their own doing / output rather than anything from Bad Wolf and co.

Yes, if anything, BF should benefit from an approach like "ALL these adventures happened...and are still happening". Theoretically new fans will want to hear more and more, BF have quite the back catalogue for them. Right now. For new material, I think Ace's setup in today's minisode seemed SO primed for a spinoff. So that'd be a test balloon if so - can BF do what they want with an older Ace, or will there be restrictions if there's even the chance of a spinoff? Surely we're past the era where BF couldn't use The Master for ages as the TV show wanted him back, but I'd understand the WAY or the timeline of certain characters being off limits. Older Mel maybe, with her returning. There's also the possibility of new ideas opening up. "Time will tell...always does" etc. |

With the plans to add the Missing Episodes Audios to BBC Sounds/iPlayer, maybe some of the BBC7 8th Doctor stuff could land up there too. Who knows?

It'll certainly be interesting to see if/how it does affect BF. I do remember during RTD1 there were certain things nixed due to characters/elements appearing in New Who and Russell didn't want them using them (I think this affected Hollows of Time IIRC?), whereas Moffat was quite happy to let BF crack on with it and I don't really think Chibnall was that bothered/aware of BF to be too involved.
Though with RTD having input into Torchwood (and potentially Rani Takes on the World?), we might see more synergy between BF and the current production team.

We dont' know what we don't know but IIRC, it was the BBC/Bad World/RTD who asked for the last part of Once and Future to be moved to next year. THere might be loads of stuff that Big Finish isn't allowed to do or tell anyone about now. We probably won't know until the end of this era. As long as Torchwood continues, though, I'll be happy.

Genuine question you can't be so bothered by people having even discussion on it that at every opportunity you Post observing you think 99% of it is Bad and it should fail,(even taking time to post that observation about Stuff you don't listen too) Regards mark687 |

I do wonder that so much Who content suddenly being readily available for free might require Big Finish to recalibrate a bit. Bit harder to pitch £20 for four hours of Who, if BBC iPlayer has hours upon hours of material just for free (well licence fee aside).
Really Big Finish should be priming themselves to capitalise as much as possible. Get some jumping on points primed for people discovering the classic series, maybe seeing if they can swap “Worlds of Doctor Who” for Whoniverse branding.

I'm sceptical that there's going to be quite as much as some people think. "Tales of the TARDIS" isn't exactly going to set the world on fire. And even if they do (say) "The Gwen & Martha Show" UNIT/Torcwhood spinoff, it's not going to run to dozens of episodes a year, as it is the Beeb and Disney can only afford a handful of proper DW in one go. That's why RTD is currently planning series 4... that's the end of series 1 in old money.
I think the big question is - remember back when Nick Briggs used to gripe that BF weren't allowed to cite the BBC as a partner on the CDs, and then the BBC had a go at them for not doing so? I wonder whether they will require (or let) BF to use the WhHoniverse branding in future, which should assist BF's synergy.

However if you were to say "there's some wensleydale with cranberries" to me, then I'd appreciate that. Not quite the same. I think audio drama is very niche. Especially for those who are young, or outside UK. The only comparable thing is podcasts. There has been a recent BBC Doctor Who podcast that was free. It wil be hard to convince those to pay for this when they have podcasts & spin-off TV shows. |

I do wonder if some of the spin-off material will be based on Doctor Who related characters created by RTD. So he can keep his hand in when he leaves the show. |

If I understand correctly, the BBC has announced there will be a section of IPlayer called the Whoniverse for Doctor Who related shows which will include "Tales of the Tardis" - a 6(?) episode series in which they reunite old Doctors and companions |
