This is something I've seen alluded to a few times over the last month or two - the idea that Tom Baker has now finished recording for Big Finish due to age/health etc. Does anyone know where it's come from? I've not seen it mentioned by anyone involved, but they record so far in advance with Tom that I suppose it's entirely possible...

I've not seen any news about this, but he declined to appear in The Power of the Doctor or anything subsequent to that. Approaching 90, I'm more surprised that he's still happy to record for Big Finish than I would be if I'd heard he'd retired. Sorry I can't give a more helpful answer. Whatever he has chosen to do, I hope he is well and happy.

I don’t think there’s any indication. He seems to do his recording earlier on in the year and I think we’ve had podcast confirmation that Nick / Benji were working with Tom this year, which would imply he’s still happy recording, albeit remotely.
He has so many years worth of content in the can that even if he did retire, or worse, then we wouldn’t be short of new performances from Tom for quite some time.

Oh, absolutely - he's given us and Big Finish way, way more than anybody could ever have expected, and whenever he wants to bow out is good by me. It's just strange to see a few people on forums/social media lately being pretty adamant that he's already done so.

I would imagine at nearly 90, Tom is living a life pretty close to full retirement. I can't see him taking on much work other than voice overs.
How much time does recording for Big Finish actually take up? 1-2 days of recording = 1 hour of audio drama?
If he records enough for 3 sets plus guest/special appearances, let's call that 12 hours of material per year. He's working maybe 12 - 20 days spread across recording schedules.
I'm thankful for any time Tom can spare, I doubt he needs the money, so I suppose he'll continue as long as he's feeling well and having fun.

But I would assume at his age he probably is finished with work. Let him rest in the time he has left.

I've seen the same thing said. BUT...I've also seen a lot of BS about BF, so wait n see. Either way - as said - he's banked plenty and who's gonna grudge him a well earned full retirement?

Yes! I had a FB reply yesterday from some random guy who was adamant Tom had finished up. Strange..

This came up on Farcebook, I said “Tom’s retired from recording at BigFinish Towers, he does what work he does now from home” and Nick Briggs vworped in to say “pretty much this” in reply.

There is a big difference between retiring and recording from his lounge room (I am sure we have all seen the photos in his lounge room setup space) . For years before hand his requirement was to record at a studio 5 minutes drive from his house which BF ammomodated for him.. then slowly due to Covid it morphed into recording in his house- literally wake up and walk into the next room !

I hope Tom is happy to continue recording from home.
When he does decide to retire from Big Finish, it would be lovely to give him a nice send off.
Perhaps a chance to make a fuss of him, with colleagues and fans sharing nice messages about how appreciated his time has been.
The same goes for all the long running Doctors and companions. Absolutely smashing chaps and ladies, all of them!

Story-wise, the 4DAs are one of my least favourite ranges, but almost every story is worth listening to for Tom’s performance alone. He can liven up the most generic script with the audio version of a twinkle in his eye.
Who knows where these rumours originate. Maybe someone heard that he was slowing down, maybe doing fewer sets now, and that got exaggerated by Chinese whispers. Maybe it was speculation based on him not doing Power of the Doctor or Tales of the TARDIS and people took it too seriously. Maybe it’s just trolling.
I’m happy either way. Whatever decision Tom makes, it’s because it’s what he’s happiest with. And therefore that’s the decision I’m happiest with.

Often free of all the nonsense BF shove into other ranges.

If Tom chooses to retire, that’s his choice and I respect it. He’s been recording with Big Finish for over ten years now, he’s put in his time.
Now I saw Benji Clifford clarify a week or two ago that this wasn’t the case and I doubt anything has changed since then.

Are these the same people who have been saying that Colin Baker is retiring next year for about the last ten years?

I like to think Tom Baker retired many years ago. Big Finish is just a retirement hobby.
I often daydream about what Fourth Doctor delights have already been recorded, and of course next year will be the Fourth Doctor’s 50th anniversary!

They’d HAVE to have something up their sleeves to celebrate that, surely? BF has the full roster of Tompanions available (Sarah and Harry recast, with Leela, K9 (unless we’re in another rights quagmire), Romana and Adric) to choose from.

I imagine things like recording audios could be considered good for him from a medical point of view. It won't be the most taxing of jobs, especially as he can record from home but at the same time it keeps the cogs moving as it were. And lets hope they keep moving for a very long time to come.

He recorded a Shakespeare sonnet for a friend's 'National Poetry Day' video series 'down the line' earlier this year ( released today), but I doubt it would have taken them much more than an hour or so to prep and record it?
