Obviously. But you can do that with "Previously on..", then expository dialogue like every other time. Opening with The Doctor talking outside the story, straight to camera is a very different way of going about it for the show. And certainly not standard RTD storytelling that you referenced above. I know. It was just a different way to do it. Bit more interesting than a Previously on. I didn't see it as smashing the fourth wall that you referenced above. No idea what else was it if not a big fourth wall break? When has the show talked directly to the audience like that outside of an unscripted Hartnell wishing everyone a Merry Christmas?

A solid 8/10 from me. Quite interesting to see RTD bring back the militarized UNIT after Moffat and Chibnall shifted away from that. Haven't seen this mentioned yet but Donna knew about the 13th Doctor. Donna directly acknowledged that The Doctor was previously a woman. That's very interesting because as far as we knew Donna had zero contact with any incarnations post 10. I caught that too I took it to mean that somehow Donna's genetic memory had stayed linked to the Doctor's. Regards mark687 She essentially had her metacrisis again when the words were read in order (very Manchurian Candidate, or Winter Soldier for a Disney audience). So, I'd imagine she got the knowledge of The Doctor now, not the one from Journey's End.

I never said it wasn't a fourth wall break, but I didn't see it as smashing it. The characters were in a pre-credits sequence intercut with flashbacks to previous adventures. They didn't turn to address the audience during a scene. The Hartnell one I would suggest is smashing it as it happens during the narrative of the story.

Well... that was fun! Happily, I think it realised the plot of The Star Beast well and I loved, loved the Meep. I thought the two main additions (Shirley and Rose) were fantastic and fit in really well (although I hope the addition of Shirley doesn't mean that Osgood is no longer going to be a part of the UNIT team...) It took me a moment to hear Ruth as Shirley after Hebe has been quite a big part of Big Finish the last 18 months or so, and she has quite a distinct voice. But she seems cool. UNIT's a big organisation, room for a few scientific advisors maybe? This and his original era do show Russell prefers UNIT to be military. Moffat explicitly wrote Kate to say they were science led now and not armed forces but RTD certainly likes that old school approach- which is perfectly valid. The new SWAT like uniforms with visors down....very Robomen from the second Cushing movie!

Well that was fun wasn't it?
Doctor, Donna, DoctorDonna, UNIT in full force, the Meep and wasn't that Hebe, shirley? (Yes 'Airplane' joke obviously. ) I await the explanation from the Sixie arc which I've not even started on as yet!
All night filming and didn't it look great! A pity that Fudge (was he still called Fudge?) was sidelined, many young Who fans might well have identified with his character. A very long time ago, I certainly would have!
These Fourteenth Doctor specials are a great idea and a super 60th anniversary treat - but it's going to be an awfully hard act to follow...

Rose called him Fudge, so yep. I think a whole family getting something to do and a new UNIT regular was quite a miraculous bit of getting it all in without feeling squeezed. Maybe Fudge and the neighbour we didn't see, Sharon, can get a BF series! For Ruth - Hebe and Purity's era, sadly, has been one of the worst received I've seen on the forum but hopefully you'll find more in them than most! Funny to think we've got Mel coming back and Hebe herself. Would be nice if they shared a scene on screen as two ol Sixie companion actors.

Apparently confirmed that The Boss will appear in the next series. So yeah doesn't fit The Toymaker.

No Doctor, you were #2, Dr Liz Shaw was #1 if only by a day or two!

Dr Liz Shaw still being treated unfairly. Justice for Liz.

Well that was more like it... that's how Doctor Who should be, fast, action packed and fun! I haven't enjoyed myself for years, I even had tears in my eyes when Donna "died". A brilliant return for everyone and what a great way to get back to the basics of entertaining television on a Saturday evening. An easy 10/10 for the pure enjoyment of it all... I loved every minute of it.
Doctor Who - RTD style - is back!!!

It's Anne Travers who was first in the Brig audios! Does Liz get the actual Scientific Advisor gig, as an official title? It's been a while since I watched Spearhead. Doesn't she get co-opted mid-interview, then says she's not been given a choice mid-adventure when she's asked about being with UNIT? Then there's the famous line about The Doctor only wanting an assistant to pass him test tubes.

Oh also... did they hint that Ten and Donna had an off-screen adventure with the Cybermen? If so, BF are probably rubbing their hands right now... And a Lupar was there!

No fancy intro for the new sonic, which given they've sold out of two runs of the replica on pre-order, has been a big hit already with fans and cosplayers.
By the way...the judge's wig was stupid.....and I absolutely loved it!
Stones Of Blood's wig meets Eden's nonsense in pockets.
And the middle 8 (always my fave bit of the theme) was glorious over the end credits. It had the piano from the TV Movie!

The Doctor's pockets may look different but they are always infinite!

Then there's the famous line about The Doctor only wanting an assistant to pass him test tubes. OK then, he's #3. True, Liz Shaw is more-or-less conscripted but she's in the role before they meet the Doctor and (secondary source) on the BF audios the Doctor introduces both of them as being UNIT's scientific advisors, plural.
Yes, the Brig does say that after she's gone doesn't he? But that's more a comment on how Liz found working with the Doctor than anything else. It would be very trying to be the most brilliant scientist in the country, specially chosen for your all-round expertise - and then to find out that you were a few thousand years (at least) behind your new colleague and his intelligence was so far off any human scale as to be immeasurable.

Not sure if this was known before today but Beep the Meep was at least in some form practical.
