Not sure if this was known before today but Beep the Meep was at least in some form practical. I do think some of the set photos showed someone in a Beep costume, likely for a effects reference. I THINK it was the very 1st "leaked' location photo and Beep ended up Trending for about 4 Days Regards mark687

That was utterly delightful. RTD and all on top form. He has a way of writing characters and dialogue that just feels so warm and authentic. And I found tbe production, music, visuals and all to be in good taste. And yeah, Meep does seem like a hybrid, a bit like how they did Dark Crystal. Augmenting practical effects with CG. Only nit-pick was the line, something like "a male-presenting time-lord would never think of this", which felt more like a Moffat-era stab at inclusivness. And I question making Rose trans because she's half-doctor too. But the stuff with her being dead-named by the boys on the street, and everything with Donna and her mum was so well-done, they really are just nit-picks. EDIT: God I'm looking forward to more of 14 and Donna. She gets her memory back, and the first thing she does is bemoan her lost lottery winnings.

Pure Season 17-style gag and I loved it too. Maybe he thought for a second he was the Fourth rather than the Fourteenth? The Doctor's pockets may look different but they are always infinite! Yep, S17 and specifically the "How To Read Ancient Tibetan" book gag from Nightmare In Eden, I think! Mountain Climbing for Beginners in Tibetan so then he pulls out Teach yourself Tibetan from Creature in the Pit Regards mark687

A new TARDIS? Seems it was used in the 80s and we missed it! Must have been that trip to Blackpool we were about to get at the end of Trial!

It was the precision of the number that got me! Every single million was mentally counted and remembered. Every last one of them!
I also loved finding out that Kate Stewart had made sure Wilf had a place in what must be the official UNIT retirement home. That was lovely.

Total RTD romp. So much fun. If the Chibnall era was a new visual standard for the show, the new RTD era with the Sony/Disney + money looks spectacular. That TARDIS is a beaut! I do like the subtle ways Tennant pitches 14 to make this Doctor the same but slightly different. The Doctor & Donna is probably my favorite modern era team, so it was so good to see them running around together again. Tennant is a world class actor but so is Tate. Those moments of her talking about missing something? Total heartbreak. Liked the solution to the meta-crisis and liked the way it took Donna’s burden away and also the way it allowed the story to utilize Rose. Unless I missed it, I didn’t hear one piece of musical comedy scoring out of Murray Gold. Anyway, it’s great to see the show looking & sounding this good.

I liked it a lot, all light and airy and amazingly uncluttered. Not so much as a hat-stand.

Loved it, a lot of fun and an utter joy. That’s the beauty of having the anniversary celebrations spanning multiple episodes; you’ll get pretty much everything that encapsulates the show, with The Star Beast being the romp.
Tennant was surprisingly different as Fourteen compared to Ten, I thought. It may be the almost gravelly voice, but I think there’s the weight of the three incarnations that have passed since. The simultaneous youth / age of Eleven, the subdued delivery of Twelve and the joy and wonder of Thirteen. If it’s maintained in the following two episodes, I think Fourteen may genuinely be better, and Ten is my Doctor!
It’s so good to get more from Donna. Incredible that she went from a one-off to a mixed reception in 2006, to one of the most beloved companions come 2008 with a very much finite shelf life due to the nature of her departure, to her triumphant return in 2023. Tate was particularly impressive in the scenes where she was lost in thought, trying to remember what she’d forgotten. Exactly how she was in 2008; ace at the comedy, but it was the character moments where she truly shone. I wasn’t a big fan on how the Metacrisis stuff was handled, to be honest, and the subsequent material with Rose lost me, but I absolutely got and fully support what it was going for, to the point where my opinion frankly doesn’t matter.
Speaking of Rose, Yasmin Finney was a joy; looking forward to more from her. Sylvia had some lovely development too; a pleasant surprise. And a shoutout to Karl Collins, who shines in his handful of scenes; loved his sheer affection for Donna & Rose.
I thought the pre-titles were a little odd. I get what it was going for, but I think there’s more than enough exposition / background in the episode itself to not warrant it. It looked weird too.
As for the new stuff?
The sonic features are interesting. I think the shield will be quietly forgotten as being a little overpowered, like the Daleks’ swivel shoulders. I liked the screen; a natural next step from the previous incarnations looking at a reading on the device that we know isn’t there!
The new titles are gorgeous, very quickly one of my favourites. I'm surprised that they’ve still not quite figured out what to do with the logo, though; gone to the effort to bring back the diamond logo, which is 3D, but that doesn’t come across on screen at all. The new theme tune doesn’t really work for me. I said it was aimless on the live version but reserved full judgement until it was used on screen, but I still feel the same, unfortunately.
The new TARDIS set is really impressive. And I think the sheer flexibility of it, particularly the different colours, means the best of it is yet to come.
Roll on Wild Blue Yonder!

I just watched it first in my house whilst Mum and Junior are out for a few hours just to check that it won't be too scary for him. He should be ok.. Well. The budget was bigger that was obvious ! So much to absorb in this episode wow! To me, it flowed well...
Catherine Tate is such a solid actress.
I can just see "those people" on the internet whinging and whining, moaning and groaning about you-know-what. Get over it . Life, we are all in this together.

I had a lot of fun with this episode!
A few minor quibbles first. Much as I love Murray Gold’s music, I did think it was a tad distracting in a couple places and it made it hard to hear what was being said. I think it also was distracting too. There’s a couple of quiet scenes here that are just absolutely lovely and would have worked much better if the score had taken a backseat for a few moments. I also feel like the ending was a little too quick and a little too tidy, which is about what I expect from an RTD script, so it’s not like I’m surprised necessarily, just noting it’s still there.
However there’s a whole lot I liked about the ending here anyways that I think absolutely made up for it. I really loved the resolution to the meta crisis problem and the more I think about it, the more just right it feels. I loved, loved, loved the addition of Rose and Shirley and I really want to see more of them! THIS is the good representation I was hoping for! My favorite scene of the whole special was at the very end, seeing the Doctor run around the gorgeous new TARDIS set, geeking out with Donna, and then of course Donna blowing it all up - I had the biggest smile I’ve had in weeks! And even though I complained a bit about Gold’s score, it was still so nostalgic to have him back and it delivered in all the big moments Gold does best. Hearing “I am the Doctor” in the background while Donna’s saving the day was another moment that made me very happy.
Looking forward to Wild Blue Yonder!

Mostly loved it. Looking forward to the next one. I'll sound my note of objection to Murray Gold's malarkey. Segun Akinola was a fabulous composer and I'd have personally preferred if they'd tried to keep him. That said, roll on next week!

A little 'RTD fairytale' towards the end, but a welcome return after 13 months...

The version she met was a Cyberiad Cyberman from Nightmare in Silver rather than the Cybusmen which were the variants during the RTD 1.

After two viewings, my thoughts:
- They successfully captured lighting in a bottle again. Full disclosure, the Tenth Doctor's era under RTD is my favorite era of Doctor Who and the Tenth Doctor is my favorite Doctor, so in a sense I am easy to please with this return to form, but in a another sense, I had VERY high expectations that the magic be recaptured. They did not let me down. The scene between Fourteen and Donna aboard the alien craft was incredibly emotional for me both times I've watched the episode. Tennant, Tate, Davis, Gold, and all the other returning folks have made major contributions to Who and their return did not disappoint.
- Tennant's subtle shifting of how he plays the character felt classic and fresh at the same time. Fourteen does not feel like Ten part II, it feels like it's own incarnation.
- Wow, that Disney+ money is on the screen! The show looks *nice*. Beep the Meep looked as good as anything you'd see on the silver screen.
- The new opening credits are absolutely beautiful. I love the visuals of the TARDIS swooping through multicolored clouds as it races down the time stream. That opening could easily become my favorite opening of all eras of the show.
- The new TARDIS interior! I lost my mind! It's so, so, so majestic. Absolutely beautiful. It's simple, clean, elegant, and jaw dropping. Tennant running around it like a kid in a candy store was so much fun.
- The script is very much classic RTD. As an adaptation of The Star Beast, it fits neatly into live action and there's a lot of fun packed into the story, but also a lot of heart and some lovely callbacks.
- The new sonic and its new effects and capabilities came off really well for me. It's a big leap forward for what the sonic can do, but after all these centuries, it makes sense that it would get an upgrade and the upgrades were used in clever ways. The hallway shootout and the way the Doctor uses the sonic to ferry everyone to safety made for a great, exciting set piece.
- The line "Donna Noble is descending" is the most Donna Noble thing I have ever heard and I am totally here for it.
- All told, I was delighted by this. What a lovely way to spend the 60th. I'm positively beaming and can't wait for the next episode to roll out.

I really enjoyed that, and my quibbles are minor. I don't like the new theme, they've added some random twiddles (can you tell I'm no musical expert) which kind of obscure the actual tune. And for some reason the end credit theme includes a duck quacking "Doctor Who, Doctor Who" over the tune.
The show did so many things so well. I know some were uncomfortable with the dead-naming, but that's the reality of this world for so many like Rose. And we needed something in the story to let us know she's trans, because otherwise we would never know. Yasmin was great and it's a shame she's not in next week's. The whole family were great, but I really missed Wilf. Hope he's back in two weeks.
Ruth fell flat for me but I loved the line about all wheelchair users having secret weapons in their chairs. Every kid with a wheelchair must surely be playing that out in the playground on Monday
The Doctor-Donna resolution was OK. The engine room split was too reminiscent of the two glass rooms in End of Time. Weird architectural setup too obviously designed to force a certain course of action from the Doctor. Took me out of the story a little.
And in-story, Donna and the Doctor both explained the backstory really well, so what was with that weird pre-credits scene of the Doctor talking to screen. Felt totally unnecessary.

Overall a solid entertaining episode, Tennant & Tate effortlessly merged into there characters like they never left, good story adaption, visuals, my only gripe the opening titles surely you could have put Tennant face in the new titles.
8/10
