Imagine if Disney were involved during The Christmas Invasion? Why is Doctor Who in bed? You don't think the BBC also give notes? Pretty sure RTD confirms they did in Writer's Tale.
'Can we do something faster/add an extra scene with the star' is the most vanilla note any exec can give.
Pretty sure I never said or implied that the BBC don't give notes. I was saying it in reference to the specific note from Disney about wanting more of the Doctor earlier in the episode and imagining what they would have said if they were involved during The Christmas Invasion. In fact as we all know, the BBC gave a pretty big note after the pilot episode of An Unearthly Child. The whole thing got remade!

I'd certainly struggle to see describe either of their characters at this stage. Ncuti did a lot of running around and posing, but I'm not sure I understand who his Doctor is yet. If I had to pin it down, I'd say he most resembles 13, with quite a lot of mumbled exposition about how unusual/dangerous the situation is. And Ruby felt very bland and generic; not a patch on Rose (new Rose). Yasmin was amazing, Millie is just kind of there. Very competent acting, but nothing to show for it yet. Obviously politely agree to disagree, respect different opinions etc etc, but I just can't see how 15 is vague or unclear as a character. Even with the caveat of first eps can only do so much, I've got a good sense of who this Doctor is and how he views the world.
As for Ruby, I concede there is less there but I like what I've seen so far and I want to see where this TARDIS team go next, so I'm satisfied.
Yeah, I barely remember anything about The Woman Who Fell to Earth except had to introduce a new Doctor, 3 new companions and featured a third tier baddie with an awful name. I’m not really smack-talking anyone’s era of Who because it always going to be someone’s favorite but for me, while 13’s era got better as it went a long, I never had a clear sense of 13 as her own her own thing. As Davey would say, she came off as a blander version of 10. That first series was competent but hardly ever compelling. I would agree with Nucleus, Ncuti was very strong out of the gate. I’d also echo Stevo & Davey, for love, like it or hate it, what we got on Christmas Day was RTD making his version of Who with some Disney helping foot the bill.

Or that return to us regardless. Like RTD2. Whether we like it or not RTD is doing what he was hired to do. The question is do we stay or do we go? I don’t know about you but if I don’t like something anymore, I move on. Life to is too short, and there is too much stuff out there to discover and too much stuff that I know I like/love to focus time & energy watching or engaging with something I don’t enjoy anymore. And then moaning about it online. Great thing about Doctor Who ,one day RTD 2.0 will be over and we will have a new Doctor & a new creative team giving those who move on a new chance to fall in love with the show again.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I felt like Gatwa and Gibson had good energy and worked well together. I enjoyed getting to know Ruby's family and backstory and the many questions raised by the episode are intriguing, making me want to keep watching. I think the introduction of fantasy that the presence of the Toymaker now allows will be fun to explore. The goblins were whimsical and nasty and it was exciting to see the Doctor encountering something completely new to him. The effects work continues to be strong and the show seems to be off to a strong start with this new era. I felt the episode was paced a little bit slowly, a problem I didn't perceive in the previous three specials, but it was certainly not a deal breaker. I think I would have trimmed a few scenes here and there to keep the story moving a bit faster, especially in the first act, but all in all very enjoyable. I'm glad to have the Christmas special back as a story telling format. I was never clear on why Chibnal wanted to switch to New Year's, but now that we're back to Christmas, things feel right.

Enjoyable and a good introduction to the themes we'll see more of in the upcoming series.
I liked Ruby and the 15th Doctor but I can't say I've got a full feel for the characters yet. I'm looking forward to finding out more in the year.
I like my Doctors full of eccentricity and not too human. The 15th Doctor seems kind and comfortable with who they are, which I like. I'm hoping stronger challenges will show us a more in depth look at what Ncuti can do in the role.
The special itself I'd say is a solid 3.5 out of 5. I absolutely adore Christmas Carol, which for me is a tough one to beat.

Well did I enjoy it? The answer is yes, do new doctor and companion work well answer also yes, So why do I feel it was a bit, something! I think actually it was the writing far too many unexplained things like why the hell did the goblins not attack while on the conveyor belt? what was the point in the accidents? Solid enough for Xmas special, defiantly a reboot in terms of style
And a massive step up from 13’s writing

As a first ep for a new doctor I liked Ncuti. Im not sure about the feel. Even some of the trailer for the next season seems the silliness may be here to stay.
Even if Disney dont control it, I dont think its too far fetched to think the producers are thinking of what would work on Disneys service and making the show with that in mind now. That wont be a welcome change for me if the threats dont pick up.
My resolution for 2024 is to listen to more big finish as Ive mostly got the Tennant stuff only so even if the show is poor hopefully the audios make up for it.

I think what would appeal to a new audience & one brought in by Disney is part of the thinking behind the writing.

On top of Nolly, another more grounded RTD show is up on BBC iPlayer: Men Up.

Finally got around to watching the Unleashed for this episode and whilst it’s nice to have a behind the scenes show again, I don’t love the format for Unleashed, so far it’s not holding a candle to Confidential.

Was there anything of note said on it? I watched a couple of the 14th doctor ones and the presenter is too annoying for words.

Unleashed had some good showings of production side of things (e.g. puppeteers for Goblin King) but if you’re wanting insight on creative choices by RTD there’s not much.
