Between the sombre hit of Minus One, and the fanboy cheese of the trailer for Godzilla x Kong, what better time to jump back to a time when the big lizard was... decidedly not either, or even getting much of any embrace. It always felt like a film included in the bracket of Phantom Menace and Batman & Robin as among the worst of the 90s blockbusters.
Broderick, no atomic breath, Simpsons cameos and a lotta fish. But is it really as terrible as all that?

Let's not forget the Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters show with Kurt Russell, I'm enjoying that well enough. And even Jet Jaguar returned in a minisode last month!
I'm a massive Godzilla (and Kaiju) nerd, and yes - it was that bad. It's not a Godzilla movie. It's Jurassic Park meets Independence Day. It doesnt have the themes or ideas of the more serious Godzillas and doesn't have the fun of the dafter ones. It's just a bad 90s movie with a monster. There's a reason Godzilla 2000 brought in this one to kill it off in a mere few seconds, it was a joke.
The jokes don't work. Broderick is a crap lead. The stakes are ill defined. The ideas are awful. There are self indulgences like casting Simpsons voiceover actors for no reason or having Mayor Ebert and his sidekick Siskel for...less reason. It's got no redeeming value. No, I take that back - I'm on the Sea Of Tranquility YT channel with Jim Bacchi of Fuzzbubble and they were on the soundtrack along with Puff Daddy, Jimmy Page and Jamariquoi. So there's that. Jim got paid.
Speaking of SOT, we just reviewed Minus One.

It's been a while, so I don't remember any details, but I enjoyed it.
I know zero about Godzilla, so I had no expectations or preconceptions, and so it was just a decent 90 minutes or so of chilling with popcorn.
Edit: OK, I did know a little about Godzilla before seeing this movie. All I can say is - where was Godzookie?!?!

No, it's nowhere near as bad as people say, in my view. It's a beautifully made monster movie. I love the way Godzilla is so huge, it won't even fit onscreen for the first half - we don't get a good look at the creature for tantalising ages. I like the characters. They're funny and flawed, but at least they're not bland like the human element in Big G films usually - and I say that as a fan (Godzilla 2000 is my fave, well worth seeing). Godzilla '98 has many great moments, the only issue being ... It isn't a Godzilla film. It is, however, a terrific monster film.
I love the American attempts at Godzilla, they're formulaic but great fun, great spectacle. For me, Toho films are the Greatest. Crazy as all heck (Godzilla versus the Smog Monster anyone?) but deadly when they want to be. I'm seeing Minus One this week. It looks as grim as the 1954 original. Can't wait!

I haven't seen it in years but remember it being fine. Nothing more. Certainly not memorable. Although I do remember at one point they can't find Godzilla. A giant lizard. In New York. & they can't find it? Also the scene with all the Godzukis felt like a poor attempt at replicating the Raptor attacks from Jurassic Park. The 2014 one might be worse, really boring. A Godzilla film can be a lot of things, but boring? It seemed to be afraid to want to show the monster & spent too much time on boring characters.
Minus One looks great, feels like tonally more in keeping with the original. I do love the more fun ones though & Hollywood seems to have finally got that right with Skull Island, King of the Monsters was a step back but Godzilla Vs Kong was top level entertainment. & this new one looks great.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

We watched it on video in late 2001… just saying that the climax - with fighter jets flying through New York and blowing up the Chrysler Building by accident - felt a little, um, dated.

It was a good monster flick. It was a dire Godzilla flick.
