We've given plenty of space to all things Star Wars, so I figured I'd give some space to talk about Lucas' other directed works: THX 1138 and American Graffiti. You can even chuck in Radioland Murders (which is for all intents and purposes his film, moreso than Mel Smith's) if you're one of the six whose seen it such as myself (I have a soft spot for it, because I like 90s riffs on 30s throwbacks).

It depends on authorship. Is the director the author of a film or is it the writer, the producer. I think we mainly see it as director. He has only directed 6 films.

Okay, definitely not how I expected this to go, so some clarification:
This is just focusing on directed-only films here. Hence no Howard, Willow or Red Tails, for instance, nor would things like Kagemusha count (RM is a grey area hence why I leave it as a possible options. Nobody would argue Lucas directed Raiders, as a counterexample).
If you want to find a more esoteric angle, if that's your bag, then I suppose you could think about what his earlier films suggested about him as a filmmaker, before Star Wars set everything in stone.

Per the intended criteria probably the only one is American Graffiti a sort of Marriage of Easy Rider, Stand by Me and the Wonder Years.

A Ridley Scott film, a John Carpenter film etc. & lots of films get ghost writers to fix the script & are not credited.

Sometimes, yes, but who doesn't think of Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi as not being George Lucas movies, just because someone else directed them

Well, you opened a can of worms by suggesting we could include Radioland Murders. The Ewok movies are just as much Lucas movies as it is.

This thread has taken off I see...
As the slightly odd criteria supplied leaves only two films to discuss... I didn't think much of THX 1138 and American Graffiti, whilst being a good film, is a bit dated now. Although the story of how American Graffiti made it from script to screen would probably make a movie in itself. The soundtrack of catchy 1950's/60's pop songs made American Graffiti enjoyable though.

Lucas is a decent ideas guy but a pretty average director. He cannot direct actors.

Lucas is a decent ideas guy but a pretty average director. He cannot direct actors. He is great at the Production side and creating the initial characters - but yes.. Directing.. definite weak spot. Just look at the original 3 movies - clearly defined characters with motivations and arcs - they all stand out . The other movies - unfortunately not as strong IMHO.. Besides Darth Maul and 1 to 2 others..
