I'm just so happy to see the return of the blue coat! There can never be enough of this costume!

Maybe this has been revealed elsewhere but it does remind me, have we ever actually been shown a story about how the conflict with the Rutans and Sontarans first kicked off? Or even how the two radically different species encountered one another for the first time?

Seconding this. I just revisited The First Sontarans yesterday. (With the Eighth Doctor outright referencing it as canon in the first SvR episode, it seemed a good time to refresh my memory.) It’s admirable how gentle and restrained it is; how how cleverly it avoids becoming another Genesis of the Daleks.

Or even how the two radically different species encountered one another for the first time? The Virgin NA Shakedown has some info, although possibly not entirely consistent with later stories. There is also a DWM comic, Pureblood, form the early 90s that has some info on the origin of the Sontarans, but I do not think this is compatible with The First Sontarans. Years since I read either, so my memory may not be entirely accurate.

Happily such inconsistencies are covered by The Great Sontaran War, which reveals the Sontarans don’t really remember how it started though don’t admit it. The Infinity Doctors played with this too; as both Sontaran and Rutan delegations posit rival accounts of the war’s beginning (with the other side as the aggressor, naturally). The Doctor quickly gives up on that line of thought.

Glad that they’ve got Christopher Ryan back to voice the Sontarans. Culshaw sounds a bit, well, Culshaw-y in his depiction, but balanced out with Ryan & Starkey should be good.

Another good entry Interestingly it could have worked as the 1st Ep cause other then Charley knowing about Sontarans and Rutans (which most of us will know why she's keeping hidden) it plays like a good one off Story. And the Interviews for this one clearly state it was intended as an Episode of a Sontarans VS Rutans Boxset 4/5 Regards mark687

There are many things I really liked about this release. Remembering how good Christopher Ryan is as a Sontaran. Dan Starkey is great, of course, but he's not the only great Sontaran actor Big Finish have on board. Joe Kraemer's music is once more very good for this release (in fact, this lively and eccentric score is one of his best): a nice surprise is hearing a 'Sontar-ha' chant in there! The Doctor and his companion being falsely accused of murder - a familiar set-up - has a nevertheless interesting and original series of outcomes. Colin Baker is still great; I have been disinterested in a number of his recent stories sadly, but that was down to the general writing, not him. His relationship with Charley remains effortlessly charming.
The script is very good, very clever. There are reminders that Charley at this stage isn't quite as she seems. Mind you, in a story about deception, similar things could be said about some of these Sontarans. I was wondering, as Born To Die - a title that takes on an even more pivotal meaning when you listen to the story - is the third instalment in this excellent series, if the Rutans would get a look in this time; Tiegan Byrne proves always to be more than a few steps ahead.
Sontarans V Rutans does what Big Finish does best. It plays with timelines, puts Doctors and companions against villains that wouldn't be possible on the television. Recast Doctors, brilliantly played, take their stories forward, whilst classic originals, like dear old Colin, prove once again, how brilliannt they are. My score is 5 out of 5.

Another great instalment. I didn’t realise how much I’d missed having a good outing for Sixie until I’d finished this, having not been enamoured with the Purity run of sets. Really liked the experimental aspect of the Sontarans and loved hearing Christopher Ryan’s interpretation again. The soundtrack was excellent, I love Joe Kraemer’s work and think he’s a real coup for Big Finish, but have also been vocal about how little he does for ranges and how much it’s repeated throughout. It’s not been like that at all with Sontarans vs Rutans, completely unique in each story and up there with some of the best.
Slight criticisms was I thought Charley being all knowing was a bit too forced in places. And I wasn’t keen on Jon Culshaw’s Sontaran. It does work in the context of the story, but hoping it’s not a regular thing.
Can’t wait to hear how all this concludes.

I also enjoyed this one. Pairing Sixie up with a Sontaran worked really well and I liked having Christopher Ryan’s involvement. I didn’t mind Culshaw’s take, but I will take Ryan and Starkey’s Sontarans over it any day.
I agree about the music. Dunno what it is about this miniseries that has inspired Kraemer so, but it’s great.
