Probably the best Colin Baker story for quite a while. He always gives it his A-Game but I don't think his recent sets have given him the material he deserves. This was a solid piece of writing from start to finish.
The plot was creative. Rutans disguised as Sontarans, up to and including the personalities of Sontarans was a stroke of genius.
I'll admit, I'm not as well-versed on the Charley Pollard storyline as some, but the script managed to get the gist of it across. I'm tempted to listen to more.
The music was... mixed. That medieval "SON-TAR-HA" leitmotif was probably the best Sontaran theme of all time, and the action/battle scenes were very well scored. But that nursery-rhyme esque tune when Charley and the alien of the week were escaping was downright weird and completely inappropriate for the scene.
All in all a solid 8/10 story. Can't wait to see how they'll bring this all to a conclusion next month.

Another terrific entry in the series (which gives away its 'Born to be a Boxset' origins by the short version theme at the end of each story doesn't it? ) and I'm enjoying it as a series, monthly episodes are fun!
I enjoyed all the old Sixie & Charley stories and it was great to have this rare chance to see them back together and Charley remembering not to remember, at least not in front of the Doctor! I'd just relistened to the first two episodes, noted 'the sunset law' as an obvious linky and thought - for a story about the Sontaran-Rutan war it's been surprisingly restrained so far... cue this episode!
These were the Sontarans Linx & Styre would be proud of - invaders and exploiters of the worst kind, with one small glimmer of light from Dan Starkey's cadet. Presumably not all the Sontarans' behaviour is built-in? As a very new recruit he seemed able and willing to learn other ways, I wonder if the final episode will explore this? A small and first-rate platoon of Sontaran actors performing above and beyond the call of duty - even allowing for digital duplication, how many times each did each one have to die slightly differently to produce those convincing scenes of mayhem and devastation.
No doubt most of us said 'Rutan' as soon as the Doctor found green gloop being fed into the clone mix, but I still didn't guess the ending. I thought the Sontarans were trying to gain the Nox abilities of shape-shifting by using some Rutan DNA to help the process, and keeping the details quiet from High Command who presumably wouldn't approve genetic material from the enemy being fed into their army.
The actual solution of a "Sontarutan" 'gone native' was much better and opens up all sorts of possibilities.
Brilliant music and soundscape again, 3/3 so far, I'm loving this series and will be sorry when it ends. Sontar(of course)-ha!

Just a quick word about the box-set/monthly release comparison - as a downloader, it makes no real difference to me. However, if this Sontaran series all came at once as part of a series, I'd listen to it all in one go (mainly because I lack the self-discipline to spread it all out). The fact that I'm 'forced' to wait a few weeks between instalments makes me appreciate them more in their own right, maybe play them more than once, before diving into the next one.
Put another way, I prefer the monthly nature of the releases.

One of the few Big Finish stories that I am listening to soon after release. That is thanks to the monthly release of each story. It is a nice treat to slot in between rotating between episodes in various box sets.
Like most who have commented so far, I found this very enjoyable. Contrary to most of the previous episodes, we actually "see" Sontarans and Rutans in the same story, though not in a expected way. The twists and turns were lots of fun.

I was hoping Once and Future would do that for me but it just didn't. I'm starting to believe that BF (Nick) has come to realize that switching everything to boxsets was a big misstep. He pretty much admitted to that in last week's podcast.

My take on 'Born to Die' is now up at CultBox: "... another solid tale in the Sontarans vs Rutans saga, with a couple of clever twists and turns."

Good story, enjoyed it a lot.
Coincidentally I am listening to some 20 year old 8/Charley stories at the moment and it was noticeable in this that India Fisher's voice has aged.

Why has this got a music cue thats a rip off of True Romance? True Romance took it from Badlands first.
