Yes, Sam has sod all personality (all u need to know is there's something a bit "odd" about her Timeline (what the books call "biodata"), it'll come into play in "Unnatural History" and "Interference".
I'd also say "read Alien Bodies" as well, it effectively establishes the storyline a lot of what happens in the "Fitz stories" (in fact, it also sets up Sam's biodata mystery) and introduces Faction Paradox, which is sonewhat important to Who, and in fact spawned its own franchise.

I'd recommend reading Alien Bodies to begin with as well. For the reasons above. Then go into The Taint

Are all of these not available online as fan produced torrents for ebook readers? I'm sure I read that they were, though I have all the original paperbacks. Is it illegal to download them if they are not available in print and have been scanned and corrected by fans? If it is, sorry for this post

It's a bizarre aspect of law I've never quite grasped. I can pick up a grubby paperback copy in a flea market for 50p and the publisher/author get nothing but it is legal. I can borrow my best friends copy and the publisher/author gets nothing but it is legal. But if my mate takes a photograph of each page and sends me those he's breaking the law. I know, the law is the law, and I'm not advocating piracy, but it is mental that companies refuse to make electronic versions available but serve take down notices on anyone who tries to share free versions.

Thanks for that guys. The law seems a bit crazy here then. If I hadn't got the original paperbacks, I'd gladly buy e-versions and that would benefit the authors too. I love the way BF give you the download when you buy the cd - a lot of companies could learn from that!

My first EDA was the Banquo Legacy, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. All you need to know, if you're reading anything prior to the Burning, is that there's a Time War in the Doctor's future, which is both reaching back to and being set up in the Eight Doctor's timestream; Romana's being adversarial to the Doctor; and there's a time-travelling Voodoo cult called Faction Paradox generally messing with things.
Reading Alien Bodies is highly recommended, both on account of its brilliance and on account of the arc elements it sets up.

It's fine if you start with The Taint, Alien Bodies will give you the background needed for some of the Faction Paradox stories (Unnatural History, Inference). It's kind of a shame that for the most part Sam's characterisation went from eco-Ace (minus the explosives) to generic companion, but writers like Lawrence Miles, Jonathan Blum and Kate Orman did make her interesting in a few books, namely Alien Bodies, Seeing I and Unnatural History.
