Counter Measures Volume 1. Silently cursing myself for waiting so long before picking up this particular range. Two stories down and I'm totally hooked on the 60's vibe. If you have finished series 1, what did you think? Series 2 is probably even better btw. If I said I was saving up for Volume 2 would that give you a clue? 😁 Really enjoyed it. Four terrific stories, a fantastic 60's vibe to the whole set and the four leads have such great chemistry together. State of Emergency was the highlight, as was Duncan Wisbey stealing his scenes as Harold Wilson.

Sir Toby and his anything-goes-to-protect-the-national-interest maxim is one of the highlights, as is his team's wariness of such which ramps-up in series 2. Glad you enjoyed it!

Another listen for The Doctor's Tale. Some tough competition but I think this Marc Platt story is still my absolute favorite from The Early Adventures range. Also one of my favorite covers, fantastic work by Tom Webster.

Speaking of Marc Platt, I have just finished listening to the excellent 'Night of the Stormcrow' Excellent and eerie in all the right ways. It also delves into cosmic horror at some points which is something that is greatly appreciated. Frankly, I'm baffled as to why this was only a bonus release when it is far better than some of the material the Fourth Doctor Adventures have to offer.

Lost Stories 2.5 Animal
The first half was a bit slow and the dialogue of that half seemed stilted and basic compared with the 'snap' of the previous two stories, but things improved a lot at half-time once the action kicked off. Good to hear from the new Brig again, though she should have booted her Sgt. out of UNIT well before this story, Benton he is NOT!
{Spoiler} Scobie seemed a bit dense to be taken in so easily by Ace and Raine, but I must say I liked the idea of a villainous animal rights activist and his hypocritical 'herbivore' alien chums! Quite 'Kerblam!-like' in being very unexpected Who villains. (And although I found the translator 'bug' irritating in 'Crime' I did lol when the 'surf dude' Metatraxi told the Doctor to get lost for humiliating them across half the galaxy! )

Another listen for the Short Trip Dark Convoy. I lost the plot a couple of times due to distractions, but a good story nonetheless. Sophie's an excellent narrator in my opinion, and I thought her portrayal of the Seventh Doctor was particularly good here. I'm really enjoying revisiting the Short Trips that follow the first four volumes, a lot of gems in this range that almost seem overlooked. I've often passed up another listen to them in favor of full cast audios, but it does seem like they're less often mentioned in general.

Loups-Garoux
Oh, good, Turlough's finally back. I'd missed him since Phantasmagoria, but I shouldn't complain about that because from now til his next appearance in Singularity it's a whopping 56 releases. Guess I should savor these when I get them, then. Especially since it is he who steals the show here. Peter Davison is also afforded excellent material, but it's Turlough's character I was most drawn in by, especially his big conversation with Rosa. Just a really excellent script all around. Love the atmosphere of Rio, love the relationship between Five and Turlough, and I really like the unusual take on werewolf mythology. It's not a story that I would list as a favorite if you just asked me spur of the moment, but maybe I should. I remember liking it a lot the first time, and on a revisit it's still very strong indeed. Great release. Often gets overlooked as it came after the McGann first season and then the 'return' of the Master in Dust Breeding. Definitely a more mature themed release, which was unusual for the Fifth Doctor at the time. The mythos and atmospheric nature comes across well on audio and all cast members are on top form. The idea of the Amazon being entirely destroyed seemed a bit far fetched in 2001. Sadly, doesn't seem that way now. As a French Speaker, the title does annoy me a bit...

We are the Daleks...which I've now managed to finish. This was good fun but a bit loud and grand for my tastes. A 6 out of 10. True, but great fun. Plays wonderfully on Thatcherism and is an excellent mirror to Remembrance of the Daleks. Perhaps BF should send copies of this to Farage/Johnson - could imagine them trying to cut deals with Skaro (I can hear it now: they may be ruthless aliens but they will help us deliver the verdict of the people).

Pier Pressure.
After reading the discussion of this overtly maligned story a few weeks back, I gave this another listen. I really enjoyed it. Yep, some scenes might drag on too long and yep, the Doctor does seem to stop in his tracks during a tense situation to make a speech or two - but apart from these minor irritants, I really liked this story. The characters, the jeopardy, the cast and the expertly crafted atmosphere are all really well conveyed. {Spoiler} It is difficult not to love the idea a glowing, malevolent creature under Brighton pier!
I liked Robert Ross's stories. Apart from being an expert in his field, he weaves a good tale. I liked that his first story involves Doctor Knox, his second involves the Indo creature - and his third story brings both of these things together. It's a shame he doesn't seem to be writing for BF anymore. I have really, really tried with this. I also tried to like it as it is Sixie. Sadly, for me, this is a real dud and is probably one of the very few Sixie releases that just falls apart. Baker and Stables try to make this good and Hudd is ok as Max Millier. Other than that, not really a great story for me. Had Knox been in it, then it might have been better, but a malevolent pier just doesn't seem that interesting as a concept.

I think I too was underwhelmed by the premise of Pier Pressure the first couple of listens, but I thought number13 did a wonderful job awhile back of explaining why it is of genuine historical interest, which greatly improved my opinion of it.

Can you imagine the reactions if it'd been done on TV as it is its impressively daring!

Re-listen to Shada. It still sounds distinctly wrong for me to hear Paul speaking Tom‘s lines. This is one of the releases that just never comes together for me. I tried again to see if it was any better this time. Still prefer the TV version with Tom.

Finished War Master 3, which was a treat on many levels. Kudos for pairing those actors and those writers together.
Catching up on missed Torchwood with The Hope, and had the delight of Sian Phillips in a leading guest role.
