The One Doctor
You just don't get the same effect on audio...
The first of the Big Finish Christmas releases! This reminded me a lot of the Voyager episode "Live Fast and Prosper" where there's a bunch of con artists impersonating the crew for profit. I don't seem to mix well with Big Finish comedy a lot of the time. It's a highly subjective genre. I did laugh out loud at the ersatz TARDIS' toilet sounds and the infinite shelves, but for the most part my reaction was mild amusement. I never found it annoying, thankfully. In fact, there's a pleasing sense of warm affection to all the various jokes at the Doctor's (and the franchise's) expense. I thought it was interesting to pair Sixie up with Mel, since we hadn't had them together before. And given her lack of screentime alongside Sixie on the TV series, they can do whatever they like with her. I look forward to seeing how this team develops under more normal circumstances. I like that the first time we get a different arrangement of the theme tune (besides the McGann one), it's that atrocious alternate Third Doctor version. That was a nice touch. A good release that I enjoyed but didn't really love. I wanted to love it, since it seems to be a fan favorite, and I can't think of anything that's actually wrong with it. So I guess I'm too much of a grouch. I did have a few laughs, and I certainly liked it better than Oh No It Isn't, but I don't feel particularly strongly about it one way or the other. Upper end of mid-tier. Its one of my Xmas BF Standards

Need something warm for my soul tonight so will go to sleep listening to one of my favorites, "The Wormery". This is a completely bonkers story (on first glance) with a surprising deep and emotional core. Plus beaten and dejected Sixie bantering with a drunken Iris is simply glorious. And then there is the famous b*tch fight between the two leading ladies for the Doctor's heart... how can you not fall in love with this weird and wonderful story?

Finished the Robots. That was a very good start to the series. And a nice change of pace compared to the usual Doctor Who releases.

Finished the Robots. That was a very good start to the series. And a nice change of pace compared to the usual Doctor Who releases. I've not seen much discussion regarding this release which is a shame as it was actually quite good. It's set in the worlds of Doctor Who yet manages to develop it's own feel and identity, much like Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon. I've seen people talk about how Liv is all sarcasm with little substance but I feel she's really start to come into her own in this series. If I have one criticism for it it's that it doesn't really do anything new with the concepts of robots or AI, choosing instead to retread some very familiar ground. What makes it work so well is that sense of identity I mentioned earlier, making those old ideas feel somewhat fresh. I'm very much looking forward to the second volume in June

Just finished Gaslight. A new series from QCODE and filmmaker Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Kelsey Asbille, Taran Killam, John Gallagher Jr., Penelope Ann Miller, Chris Ellis and Amandla Stenberg. Gaslight is a psychological thriller that unfolds over 10 chapters. It’s about a missing girl in the USA. She goes missing after graduation from high school then turns up 8 years later on her best friends doorstep. It’s very good but certainly I felt uncomfortable listening to parts of it. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but the ending is a little...and...
4/5 (loses a star because of ending)

You're welcome - sorry, couldn't resist
Another irresistible thing from time to time, is dipping into the Liberator Chronicles. Today, Box 6's Incentive gets a re-listen. Steven Pacey and Paul Darrow growl at each other, alongside excellent BF regular Adrian Lukis, in Peter Anghelides' witty story about people not quite being who you want them to be. Great fun, and a listening experience that fills me with hope of Blake's continuation at BF in these Chronicle-style stories.
