Davros
Absolutely excellent. A phenomenal look into Davros' psyche. Separating him from the Daleks so that he could be the sole focus was an inspired move. I assume the flashbacks depicted here will lead into I, Davros, or be repeated in more detail then? Listening to this it struck me that on TV, we saw that Davros was the origin of the Daleks, but never found out much about the origins of Davros himself. I think he lends himself better to this sort of one-on-one with the Doctor than Omega does. Though I find it interesting how both parts of this trilogy so far have highlighted the similarities between the villains and the Doctor. When they are both hired on at TAI, I was preparing myself for some catty workplace comedy and ended up with a tense battle of wits. If I have one complaint, I'm not sure I like the idea that Davros may not be sole mastermind of the Daleks. The whole cast is very strong, but Terry Molloy steals the show. His performance in this story covers such a wide range - wistful, almost heartbroken, to his most Dalek-esque hysterics. He's nearly hissing in places. And his description of 90 years' sensory deprivation is captivating. Another jewel in Colin's audio crown. *nods* I, Davros will actually tell the same story in the flashbacks from a different perspective. Mind you, they don't reuse the performances from Davros, so it'll be interesting comparing the memory of the events with its reality. I think Davros and Shan were intended as a bit of a riff on Terry Nation and Raymond Cusack. Shan imagined the Daleks. Davros created them. Going through some of the I, Davros stories, I was surprised by how much Davros is echoed in the Sixth Doctor, in particular. Both of them took radically different paths in the end, but there was a similarity there once. There is something astonishing about being able to take the archetypal power mad despot, break him down to his base components and reconstruct him as an even stronger menace than before. The sound design is excellent as well, I always imagine the scene of the Doctor holding the shotgun on Davros as a mirror of the similar shot in Resurrection of the Daleks. I think it is one of the best things Big Finish has ever produced. That's the star to swing for in Doctor Who's discussions of morality.

Today:
Bang-Bang-A-Boom! Another of the early MR that has grown on me, really good fun and much better than it gets credit for.
England v Australia 3rd test day 3. England all out for 67...67 ffs...and at the moment the Aussies are putting the boot in after 2 days. I know how it all ends but still a great listen.

The Natural History of Fear An astonishing, brilliant story and it must be one of Paul McGann's very finest performances - and an unexpected treat hearing Sean Carlsen too, plus a terrific sound design among the other highlights.
So complex, it really needs a lot of concentration to follow but it's well worth it! A story which can be replayed many times and I suspect will always give a slightly different viewpoint each time...
{Spoiler}And an amazing final twist to finish things off!! He wasn't the Doctor, all the time! There really are some experimental treasures in the early years of the MR and this is one of the very best. Superb.

...ish. Well, this was just made for Colin. I would find it hard to imagine any of the other actors could perform this was well.

Hello again.
Just finished the densely layered and really imaginative Storm of Angels. Geoffrey Bayldon makes a fascinating alternative First Doctor and Carole Anne Ford is great as Susan. I enjoyed the space setting and the court of Gloriana is well-realised. I could picture this story really easily.
From there I heard Sympathy for the Devil, which is an absolute classic. David Warner would have made a great Doctor. He has gravitas, cares about those around him and has a dry sense of humour. He works well encouraging a world-weary Brigadier. Nicholas Courtney is able to portray his different version of the Brigadier with great aplomb and wit. His confrontations with David Tennant's Brimmicombe-Wood are electrifying. The villain of the piece is typically sinister and the whole story has great sound design, well-paced direction and a thrilling listen. Looking forward to the sequel.

That's interesting, he did seem to get a bit confused and to willfully twist things. Hopefully I still remember this story well when I get around to I, Davros then. The Daleks being partly Shan's too is only a minor quibble, and they way you put it with Terry Nation and Raymond Cusack actually makes it more appealing. I very much agree it's in the upper echelons of BF's output, at least so far. Certainly shot near the top of my own leaderboard.

He's one of my favorite Doctors. I love the sardonic bitterness. If I was that far ahead of everyone else all the time, I'd probably end up far more bitter than I already am.

Over the last four days (an episode a day) I have listened to The Black Hole. I do find these Second Doctor stories a struggle.
It had a lot of modern features and the introduction of the rather wonderful Rufus Hound as The Meddler, which was my main reason for buying and listening to it.

May I ask what makes these so difficult for you to listen to? Is it the narration? I am just asking out of interest.

In part because if the era they are trying to recreate - it always seems so slow and I don’t have the affinity to the characters that I have with the later eras of the show. Frazer Hines as Jamie is wonderful, but I am not keen on his take on the Second Doctor. It sounds like what it is Frazer Hines doing an impersonation. It might work for me better in a story without Jamie, as at times it feels like Jamie is do the impersonation. In the future of the Third Doctor thread I criticised Katy Manning for her portrayal of her former self, but she is 100% more believable than Deborah Watling as Victoria. I appreciate her and Big Finish doing it, but I couldn’t identify the voice to the character. All in all I found it very hard, due to the voice acting to get immersed in the story and characters. I have tried a few of the other Second Doctor stories and really like Jamie and Zoe.

The Twilight Kingdom
I liked the first and last episodes especially and there are some good twists but three episodes could have done the job imo. Well performed, just a bit slow in the middle, but a good story with some surprises.
{Spoiler} I liked the way a seemingly standard 'rebel hideout & villain' story turned out to be nothing of the sort and a most unusual "monster". I felt rather sorry for the mysterious creature at the end, and the people who it had ensnared, left traumatised by their war.

Started over with Sword of Orion and listened in entirety for the Cyber-Marathon. I did indeed enjoy it more than ever before. It really helped hearing Cyberman 1-4 just before it.

Goodbye Piccadilly.... okay, should have expected that from the blurb on the website. Yeah, it was fun, but there was just a bit too much gay (?) sexual humor in it for me and in the end it was not so much funny anymore but painful. Still like Andy. Really looking forward to him in Stranded.
Nowhere Place. This is a story which is amazing and Interesting and atmospheric in the first half. Creepy too. But it turns into complete mumbo jumbo BS in the last episode. I think it is one of the crassest examples of a good BF story completely falling apart at the end, at least I find it hard to name another story where I noticed this so much. Really only got this out for a re-listen for the atmospheric first part and since I am tired and listening to this going to bed, will thankfully have fallen asleep by the time the BS happens.

Unregenerate! I've always liked the sound of this one - and no McCoy's ramblings don't bother me at all - but I've never managed to finish it. Will make sure I do so today.
