Another go at Rat Trap for me. It wasn’t the best but I completed the last two episodes today when I got home.Good Foctor Who story with some good moments and very much could have been done at the time.

Yep, I've got a half hour of it left and will finish it at bedtime. Much better via my headphones rather than on speakers, and although not great I'm enjoying it. A solid 6 out of 10.

Dreadshade (Lisa McMullin)
A nice little what could have been regarding a universe where the Time Lords won the war. Delves into some thought provoking ideas but unfortunately due to the length of the piece, it doesn’t explore them enough for my liking.
(Personally I think the Time Lords would become more militant and expansionist in a post Time War universe. If only so as no one could ever threaten them again but that’s just my opinion.)
Ken Bones was terrific by the way. Really hope he makes future appearances.

Dreamtime
I knew going in that this was not a popular story, and that it was generally seen as being incomprehensibly weird. I actually looked forward to it, because weird and esoteric is right up my alley. I thought that, like Zagreus, I might like it and find myself the lone voice going "hey, now, it's not that bad!"
And at first it seemed like we were off to a good start. People and places turned to stone. Collective dreaming. A setting which evoked images of James Blish's wonderful Cities in Flight. Hell, they didn't even pull the usual stunt of explaining away all of the magic. Unfortunately, my interest had waned significantly by the end of it.
Now, other bottom of the barrel tales I could mention, have been baffling, painful, boring, or downright loathsome. But Dreamtime is simply insubstantial. The whole thing suffers from shoddy construction. The characters lack depth. The entire plot strand with Ace and the Galyari doesn't seem to matter much in the end. While I like the mythology elements, they lacked that requisite air of mystery. While it is often accused of incoherence, I would argue that the ultimate nature of things is too literal and mundane.
So is it one of the worst Main Range stories? So far, yes. And I'll probably never listen to it again. But it's not quite as bad as I'd been told, either.

I enjoyed reading your review and agree with many of your views - but I still love Dreamtime. It has a magical, convincingly surreal quality. Style over substance, perhaps.

The Island of Doctor Moreau.
I've just seen Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau (a hugely recommended documentary about the making of the 1996 adaption - incredible anecdotes, and a million miles away from HG Wells!), I thought I'd reacquaint myself with Big Finish's excellent version of the original story (as opposed to a production dictated by the egos of two of its main players). Once again, I am reminded how excellent and - if anything - underrated this is. A scientist with delusions of grandeur and no-one to reign him in, and the poor resultant creatures is very Frankenstein-esque, but entirely its own, er, beast, and very well played, especially by the wonderfully voiced Ronald Pickup. The BF classics are always well worth a revisit. It makes me wonder if they plan anything similar in the future. Hope so!

I'm glad to hear that Dreamtime has at least one fan. Sometimes the "bad" stuff someone likes makes for more interesting discussion than the widely acclaimed stuff. I think every fan adopts an unloved pet after a while. I like Zagreus, you like Dreamtime, I've seen some passionate defense of Web Planet...

Been marathoning the radio series ‘Nebulous’ by Graham Duff whilst I have been partaking in my daily exercise and today I finally finished it.
It’s still very, very funny after all this time and if you’re a fan of silly wordplay and surreal situations then I can’t stress that this is very much for you. Helps if you’re a fan of classic British science fiction as well as it lampoons whilst lovingly paying tribute to such programmes as The Quatermass Experiment, Doomwatch and of course a certain time traveller we are all familiar with.
Would highly recommend. I’d also suggest giving his (so far) only contribution to the Doctor Who universe a listen ‘Faith Stealer’ a look if you’re interested in some more of his writing.

The Master of Blackstone Range, to date the most recent Sherlock Holmes story from BF. Jonathan Barnes is an ideal writer for Sherlock - apart from providing a gradually building, compelling story that always promises a magnificent pay-off, he also gently expands on the lives of the principal characters. Here, Watson is down-in-the-dumps due to the brickbats life has thrown at him, and Sherlock is driving them both bananas because he is older and has no crimes of interest to sink his teeth into. So, a couple of seemingly unconnected occurances kindles both their interests. And that's how things kick off. I'll be listening to one episode each evening over the next couple of days following this - all over again! Even though I vaguely remember the intricacies of the finale, Barnes' stories are so densely compacted that they always sound fresh.

It feels like the first day of autumn today, the final (men's) cricket match is half way through and the weather has turned decidedly chilly. The sun was trying but is becoming more watery each day.
Anyway, it feels like an evening to do not a lot and while away the time with tea and BF. So then..

The Pursuit of History/Casualties of Time (Nicholas Briggs)
One of the better Nicholas Briggs finales. I’ve always been rather conflicted when it comes to the character of Cuthbert (I like him but not enough to be a recurring character) but I think this redeems him. Not to mention David Warner is a treasure as always. I honestly wouldn’t mind if the Conglomerate made a future appearance after this providing financial backing to assist in the Doctor’s or any of his allies adventures. A benevolent patron if you will.
I rather liked the droll Oortag as well.
