I don't want to come across as a Clara hater, but it felt like she was a different person every year; they might as well have recast every year. It felt to me like she was just used as a plot device, which I think is why Jenna ends up coming in for so much hate from some people - it must have been very difficult to play the character in any engaging way because we never really understand who she is.

Kind of a bland cipher with really inconsistent characterization, that was mostly irritating to me. The Doctor keeps telling us she's great, but it never shines through in the writing, and the more important they tried to make her by she-horning her into every aspect of the continuity, the less endearing she became.
Good in a few episodes here and there, but I'm glad she's finally gone.

I liked her best in Series 7 and 8, though Series 9 did have some admirable qualities to how it dealt with her character arc. In a lot of ways, though, I think they could have made better choices to enforce what her character was all about. For instance, as much as people seemed to dislike the kids she took care of in Series 7, I would have kept her in that position for the entirety of her tenure as the Doctor's companion. The decision to make her a teacher in the 50th anniversary felt more like the writer's attempt to shoehorn in a reference to Coal Hill School than it did an actual development of Clara's character. A better approach, I think, would have been to have Clara drop the kids off at Coal Hill before leaving to find the Doctor. Then, in Series 8, Danny could have been introduced as the kids' father, who needs Clara's help taking care of the kids, which would put Clara in the position of having to choose between Doctor-life and real life. I dunno, I just think this all could have been handled a lot smoother.
A problem I had with Series 9 in particular is that we don't see a mourning phase for Clara after Danny's death. She's too bright and chipper, without any moment for the stories to acknowledge that perhaps this is a facade she's putting on to cope with her loss. I understand this was more down to Jenna Coleman's indecision at the end of Series 8 to leave or stay, and that many of the scripts had to be hastily rewritten to include her, but some of the later episodes in particular could have included even a single scene to allow Clara to mourn.
Overall, I liked Clara, but I think there were a lot of better choices that could have been made concerning her character.
