There is a new Kickstarter for a full cast audio recording of Harlan Ellison's original script for City on the Edge of Forever
I couldn't resist this

Was that based on the TV script or the original? The original (so theres a drug dealer on the Ship and its them rather than McCoy who causes the havoc etc). As much as I love Bones, I much prefer the original screenplay, it has a nice moral message attached to it that the final episode seems to sadly lack. Despite all the evil he has accomplished, Beckwith's single selfless act in saving Edith proves the capacity for good in even the most wretched of men. I'd love to see an audio adaptation of this.

Never read the original so this will be a first for me.
Bones is my favorite character and I am glad his role was increased for the TV series but since we aren't going to have DeForest Kelley in this I can live with Bones being cut here.
While Ellison was/is still very unhappy about the changes made to his script he always said that De was his favorite person on Star Trek.

As am I, for a character who was more often than not a hot-blooded observer on the original series, DeForest Kelly left some pretty big boots to fill. I'm grateful for the Diane Duane books that more often than not put him in the limelight.

Well, the kickstarter was successful - which was pretty much expected as they already are in production for this.
I contributed, but with maybe a bit of indifference on my part. For whatever reason, I'd never bothered to seek out Harlan's original treatment of the story. I know the story behind this pretty well though, and know that even the staff recognized how good the original story was, but there was no way the studio could afford to make it nor would the network allow it to air as originally written. What made it to the air still was the most over-budget episode of the original series, and usually regarded as one of the best ST episodes ever. I know I thought it was, not knowing anything about ST when I first-watched it on a small B&W TV set, on late night airings, back in the 1980s.
I think some of the reason I never sought it out was I was a bit put off by the extreme anger that Harlan had over the rewrite process. All scripts for ST went through many rewrites, some of the original authors took it better than others, understanding the reality of the TV production process.
Still, as an audio this seems like a good idea and am a bit surprised that it wasn't done years ago.

So, is this... what, an official licensed thing, or a fan audio? Because, y'know, what with one thing and another, possibly 2016 isn't a great time to be starting a fan production of "Star Trek". Especially not using the script of Harlan "Actually, I Don't Sue All That Many People" Ellison....

It's completely official Harlan Ellison is a part of it so are many Star Trek alums like LeVar Burton, DC Fontana, & David Gerrod.

I don't believe this is licensed Star Trek, although it is a licensed treatment of the authors original script. I think it's like the multiple licensing arrangements over K9. of course I could be wrong, and often am.

I wouldn't call it a fan production though Sky Boat isn't a fan company. They are an audio book publisher. skyboatmedia.com/The only way I could see them possibly getting in trouble (and I assume they looked into any legal implications beforehand) would be be with the use of Kirk and Spock. But I am not really worried.

I can't believe I missed this. Harlan Ellison is far and away one of my favorite writers.
