This one doesn't feel like a Doctor Who story. The comedy is awful, the acting is bad, and Ace and Hex are both out of character. Kind of reminds me of the equally shite Avatar: The Last Airbender episode The Great Divide.

I listened to this after all the big Hex story line stuff and coming back to Hex I was like “wow he’s a lot different than I remember, more jock than humble nurse” and I can’t remember anything apart from the drinking ...

I do have some Hex stuff still to finish actually as all the sales have pushed them back and I want to save them but this Hex re listen gives me a great excuse to listen to them

At least it tries to be funny and fails. Characterization is wrong, jokes are unfunny, things kinda suck but it tries to be a breath of fresh air and give a breather. I found it wasn't a slog and that there were one or two completely stupid jokes that got a chuckle. More than you can say for any story by Robert Ross.

The only good thing I can say about The Dark Husband is, it's not as bad as The Boy That Time Forgot... but there's not a lot in it.

The only good thing I can say about The Dark Husband is, it's not as bad as The Boy That Time Forgot... but there's not a lot in it. At least Boy That Time Forgot has that 20's pulp adventure feel, with the Land of the Lost/Land that Time Forgot setting with the jungle with giant scorpions and the city. The actor who played Rupert bloody love crisps! There wasn't much of a tone with Dark Husband, as Tuin was a very flatly characterised world, and the Ir and the Ri being represented by one character each. The whole plan is largely pointless. It relies on a male and a female not only coming to Tuin during the festival, but coming across the pillar, deciphering that the wedding will stop the war and the male being willing to go through with it, and the female unknowingly completing the ritual to become the Shining Wife. Given that for as long as the war has been going on for no one until the Doctor has put themselves forward, and this is the first time it's been performed. The Ir and the Ri don't even remember the rituals, and are nearly as much in the dark as the Doctor, Ace and Hox, which is why the exposition scene I referred to earlier in the thread is pointless. Yes, there are brochures as the Doctor had one, but surely the thought of going to a world where only a small window of time won't be likely to get you killed in the crossfire would be offputting. Unless you're Hox and just want to get drunk.

Meet Hox. He's got no sensitivity, calls people insulting names based on their appearance, likes getting on the lash and may have feelings for Ace. I'd rather have Hex, a sensitive soul who brings humanity where the Seventh Doctor and Ace don't always show it. His first priority is getting everyone through events in one piece and in top condition. He's also unafraid to call out the Doctor and Ace when he feels they've crossed a line, and is like a brother to Ace.

I'm endlessly fascinated by "The Dark Husband", although not so far to the point of paying to listen to it - David Quantick's just so funny I can't imagine how this could be disaster everybody says it is. And as for "The Boy That Time Forgot", now I've discovered that Paul Magrs put Brenda the Bride of Frankenstein into it, I need to listen to this as well.
Come to think of it, I enjoyed "Underworld" on Twitch yesterday. Is there something wrong with me?!

Comedy is trickier than you'd expect. The joke needs to fit the character, and the character needs to be consistent with previous portrayals. The tone of the comedy Quantick brings to this script doesn't fit Doctor Who (the farting Slitheen had more subtly) and as discussed above, takes huge liberties with the characters to facilitate the jokes.

Everything is off in this one and it bores me.
One of the very few BF episodes I actively dislike.

A story that feels monotonous with a small cast that sounds like a small cast (but wasn't supposed to).
To this day, whenever see that title to this story, I hear it in a zombified monotone, and in my head I hear the added subtitle "...and the Shining Wife".

I will have to pay attention to(I suppose except this one!) more audios to pick u up on that. Considering how Ace losing the plot and her own humanity is brought up in other audios it's a very interesting idea that she would need someone to remind her.

It's a large part of The Settling framing sequence. Those feelings would have been followed up but that went as part of the change of production team.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (Holds Crucifix against CD)...."back to hell demon". 1/5. You know it's just a CD, not a vampire.
'The Dark Husband' sounds interesting. Hope to revew it. That is after I've listened to it of course.

An absolute car crash of a story.
In addition to all of the above, part of the issue is it is so uninteresting you switch off whilst listening to it then when you try to tune back in you have missed so much it is hard to work out what is going on, which makes it an even more frustrating listen. In this case though that may be a blessing in disguise.
One thing I wonder about stories like this is what went through the producer & script editors minds when they were doing it. Did they see the car crash happening and foresee the terrible reviews, or did they think at the time, "Well it's not so bad" and were then genuinely surprised by the reviews? And if they did foresee it, why did they ever let it make it into production. I don't imagine this is a question they would ever answer publicly if they can avoid it. Be interesting to hear Nick's diplomacy put to the test if the randomoid selectotron ever brings this up in a podcast.
