Anyone still thinking of taking advantage of the closing down sale should do so soon. Not only are items going out of stock quickly they're now unable to honour orders they've already taken. Just received an email to say some of the items in the two orders I placed are now unavailable. I'll get a refund and details of which items in a further email to follow. I had that with one item, I think stuff doesn't get taken from stock till payment completes so someone else can bag the last copy while you're still checking out.

If you buy something whilst it's still in stock, they should do whatever they can to fulfil your order not cancel it. It doesn't matter if they've cleared all stock and they're not planning on stocking any more, they should get new stock to fulfil already existing orders. It's hardly like this merchandise is hard to get hold of.

In the past they possibly would have backordered the title and only cancelled the order for out of print titles, but it's a closing down sale, I'm afraid they have little incentive to offer good service.

They'd get more money if they bothered to try to fulfil your order regardless of their stock though, even if it is a closing down sale. Plus it's frustrating if they cancel part of your orders because the sale makes them cheaper than elsewhere. There's still ages before they close anyway so hardly like they don't have time to get hold of the stock when it's all BBC merchandise and they can contact the companies who produce them for BBC Worldwide and tell them they have orders from people who want them.

They'd probably make a loss on replacement stock as the sale is heavily discounted. Stock you've had in your warehouse for a while has already been written off so you can sell it cheap without losing money as it has no unit cost. Same doesn't apply if you need to buy more in.

The other aspect, and this is grim I'm afraid, but having been involved in these scenarios I know to be true, the sooner they can put 'sold out' across the DVD section, the sooner they can make rhe staff in that section redundant. They're probably running on agency workers by now so the faster the stock goes the less people they need next week, the less money the business costs them. At this stage in a close down that can be a more important factor than anything. trying to fill your order means having to continue to employ someone, and that's not what they want to do. Sorry, I said it was grim.

I haven’t had any emails but my 2 orders have been showing as "released for delivery" for a couple of days now. Not sure if that's good or bad.
Cheers

Cheers Tony They're probably scrabbling round the warehouse trying to find the stock their computer says they have! Could be hiding behind all those copies of Spearhead from Space that oddly nobody want to pay £7.79 for.

I guess they just can't find the copy of Spearhead From Space I ordered (only joking, I didn't order that lol). Cheers Tony

Not a surprise, the commercial wing have been increasingly releasing sets to Amazon that were constantly listed as sold out on the BBC Shop. There's more money, but smaller margins, to sell in a bigger online market. Even a lot of Who fans never used the BBC Shop despite having great prices and early delivery for pre-orders. I've got many happy memories of a cherished Who serial or ten arriving on the friday or saturay before release date. They also had some great sales and discount codes.

Either that or disgruntled former employees have departed with stacks of DVDs up their jumpers!

Cheers Tony Well someone was willing to shell out £7.79 for Spearhead on DVD as it's now sold out. And I've now had an email saying my special editions of Green Death and Remembrance have been despatched, so maybe they were hiding behind them!

Had another email saying my first order has been dispatched . Cheers Tony EDIT: Toying with getting Vengeance of Varos and The Visitation. I know they're not special editions but at that price, worth it if the only difference in the versions are the extras (unless the episodes have been cleaned up or something)

I just wish the RT Team had done a Special Edition of Ghostlight you can really notice the fuzziness on it compered to the later released stuff.
EDIT
In fact the only content difference I can think of in terms of Bonus Features is that the Standard Edition of the 3 Doctors has a convention panel from a 30th anniversary con with Pertwee, Manning and Courtney which isn't on the Special Edition.

Ghost Light effectively is a Special Edition in that it was made using the same techniques as the special edition of the Visitation. It's only the very earliest DVD's rhat weren't. The source material for Ghost Light must be awful, which would make sense given the low lighting levels throughout.

Unless I'm misreading the emails I received today it would seem I only had one item from each of my two orders cancelled: one non-Who DVD and one Who book. So not as bad as I feared, and I'll easily pick up both elsewhere in time for similar prices.
