The War Games episode 3 (with 1 & 2 last night). I started my Patrick Troughton chronological watch & listen in June 2018 and am just now reaching the end of it. (Starting into Hartnell next - hopefully that'll move faster!) This is the third time I've watched this serial - only the fourth classic Who I ever watched in the first place, my first Troughton and probably my favourite Troughton! So that's once in 2012 when I first tackled the series, once in 2013 for my 50th Anniversary playlist and once now... But this time, my wife is joining me, having never seen a black and white Who before - just 80% of the new series, Robot and the TV Movie. Seeing something familiar through fresh eyes is exciting, as the Eleventh Doctor once said to Amy Pond. This experience makes me notice a lot of silly things - we laughed a lot at Ransom's dialogue, for instance, given that he seems to be talking twice as fast as every other character. And there's been a lot of discussion of English actors doing accents, like the German officer whose accent drifts eastward towards Russia once or twice. But I'm noticing a lot of little things to appreciate as well - for instance, I never thought about the poetic touch that Jamie's last story features a scene where he teams up with a redcoat! It's been fun so far - finishing the disc with another two episodes tomorrow! As a German myself, and as someone who is often quite allergic to bad German accents in Who... I have to say I am pretty impressed with the German accents in the War Games. I even think at least one of the guys is a real German (I have not checked the cast list). I think there is a scene where some guys speak German, as far as I vaguely remember... and I can understand what they are saying. Pretty sure real Germans were involved.
VERY often, when actors try to speak German in Who, I cannot understand what they are saying because it is completely clear they have no clue how to pronounce things and they could as well talk Kisuaheli. One of the most recent offenders is the German officer in Twice upon a Time. Only subtitles revealed what this was supposed to be.
In general, I love the War Games. It is one of my favorite Classic serials. That was something I noticed with The Enemy of the World. Australian accents done by overseas productions have the potential to be... well, ear-piercing horrors you wouldn't visit on your own worst enemy. By comparison, Enemy managed to pull off the regional countryside variant rather well. Not flawlessly, but pretty close for what you needed.

Perhaps it's just my own ignorance then - as TV Tropes says, sometimes, Reality is Unrealistic!

I've been watching the exquisite Warriors' Gate once again. So much to love about this extraordinary story. It shouldn't be anywhere near as good as it is - the director was 'removed' someway through recording, and writer Steve Gallagher complained to producer JNT that it was nothing like the story he'd written. But it is visually, dramatically and designer-wise, absolutely beautiful. I'm not sure there has never been another story like it. In fact, there definitely hasn't. A fitting finale for the lovely Romana.
And speaking of Lalla, I'd forgotten just how much, during that scene in episode two where she leaves the TARDIS to talk to Rorvik and his desperate group, she seems to be flirting with them. A curiously, but delightfully, choreographed scene thats adds further strangeness to a decidedly bizarre story. That a supposedly intelligent character leaves the safety of the TARDIS at all is far from sensible, but for her then to vamp it up in front of a group of strangers is asking for trouble. We could of course suggest she is leading them away from Adric and K-9 and keeping them safe, but despite Rorvik's intention to 'bust it open', the TARDIS is impenetrable.
This isn't a complaint, because without illogical moments, where would the drama be?
Oh to heck with. I'm off to listen to The Nightmare Country again.

But also the bit players that pursue the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria across the beach. The most talkative of the trio is played by a Scotsman born in Edinburgh. It's a really strong cast, all in all. Bill Kerr, Mary Peach, Carmen Munroe, Colin Douglas, George Pravda, David Nettheim, Milton Johns... A lot of them would turn up in later stories playing other roles and those who don't, I kinda wish they had. It's a large retinue of characters and there isn't a weak performer among them.

Watched Survival again last night. Its still annoying that the series was cancelled when it was getting so good again.

I watched The Beast Below through the Angels two parter. Five episodes into Matt Smith’s first series and the only real misstep to me is Victory of the Daleks and even that isn’t terrible. I don’t know that I’ve watched since Beast since its first transmission and I found it quite excellent. It certainly lays a lot of ground work for Amy and does a really good job of cementing 11 and Amy’s bond. Matt Smith was just on fire in these early episodes.

Destiny of the Daleks - I've never liked the Movellans. Those androgynous yahoos with mops for hair should spack off. We do at least get the lovely Romana II, but unfortunately to my recollection Season 17 begins a decidedly rocky stretch for Four with City of Death being the exception.

Last Christmas. Aparet from some irritating dialogue - shut ups and 'is this a thing?' type cutesie-isms - this is great fun. It is definitely one of my favurite Christmas specials. The guest cast are very good and the face huggers are pretty scary. And I love the joke about 'a horror film called Alien (no wonder your planet keeps getting invaded!)'.

It’s an episode that is terrifying, heartbreaking, heartwarming, romantic, and above all else magical😊

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Am I right in thinking Clara was originally to have been written out with this story, but it was decided she should carry on into Series 9 and it was rewritten? I wonder if her final appearance would have been as the older version of herself.
