Keys of Marinus Uneven but moody and atmospheric quest serial. I love the design of the Vord, the strange perception shift in episode two, and the eerie jungle, the snow scapes. Some of it was a bit less interesting, I wasn’t too excited by the court room drama but it was very eerie and imaginative in places. Yeah, I have similar thoughts on it. It's fun. Pretty experimental for the time too. I like the concept that each episode we're more or less travelling to a different aspect of the same world. Seeing how each society has dealt differently with the Conscience being disabled. Some have established courts of law, others impose their will directly on their people, others further still exist in complete lawlessness. I like the set up for the Brains of Morphoton with Ian getting the initial suspicions, but Barbara ending up leading the story (the pay-off is one of her best moments; punching off Ian and going for the life support apparatus). In hindsight, I do think the jungle and snowscape episodes could have been combined with the two split teams dealing with their own respective problems at the same time. Nowdays, it could probably be told in four or five parts, easy (a la Seasons of Fear). All in all, though, a nice story. Ooh... Speaking about the design for the Voord. It's likely a coincidence, but there's a fantasy film called Krull which features creatures called Slayers. If there were ever a desire to upgrade what's already a great idea (or even just show a different group), they look almost like uncanny cousins:

It seems like a prototype Key to Time, if they did that story nowadays it'd be a full season long. But as it is, the continual change of locale and different adventures keep the story feeling fresh. I don't think it drags the way some of the other 6 parters do.

DVD Booklet: Timelash isn't all bad Me: YES IT IS
But... Herbert Wells!! That glorious Pertwee portrait!! Tinsel!!! And not to forget...
Tekker! The Borad! The Robo-dancing Robots!
The Dialogue!!! 'He's dangling on the edge of oblivion!' 'Save your breath for the Timelash., Doctor. Most people depart with a scream.'
Imo even if anyone doesn't like the story ( are there such people? ), the DVD is worth buying just to listen to the commentary track with Paul, Colin and Nicola.

You know, I've mentioned it for ages and ages, but it never occurred to me to write up a scene breakdown for a slimmer, sleeker Timelash. Rectified. For anyone with video editing skills who'd want to potentially take a crack at it. The nature of the original also puts this story in the rare position of being one of those stories you can rescore with additional music, as well. From the original composer. In the same way that a story like Inferno was scored with stock music by Delia Derbyshire. Elizabeth Parker has some surprisingly eerie music tracks in her repertoire that can be reused for Timelash.

I went on a 'Timelash' journey from viewing in 1985 ('I can't believe my favourite show has come to THIS!!') to buying the DVD in 2014 on a whim and enjoying it no end!

'Narm'-ish moments, but you know 'guilty pleasure'. Some of it's for reasons you'd expect. Like, a few of the bit part actors were fresh out of drama school when they got the parts and were still adjusting. There's a great story behind Tekker, though. Apparently, according to the DVD commentary, Paul Darrow remembered Colin Baker playing Bayban the Butcher on Blake's 7, five years earlier, and decided to play his arch villain in such a way to potentially one-up him. "Ah, I see your nefariousness, and raise you..." I kind of like it. The Doctor vs. Richard III in Space is a nice concept. It's cool to see another B7 alumni on Who in such quick succession after Jacqueline Pearce.

Revelation of the Daleks - That DJ is the greatest and best supporting character from the entire season. He annoys Mr Polly to no end, but I delight in his...foibles.

Four to Doomsday. I just love Stratford Johns and Philip Locke in this. I could watch and listen to them all day, I really could. “That is not me... This.... is me!” That line is delivered so well. Love it!

The Web Planet I know this story doesn’t have the best reputation, but I kind of love it! It’s be very oddly relaxing to watch and I think all the giant bug and insect creatures are absolutely adorable!😊 I love the weird sort of sleepy sing-songy way the Menoptra speak! The only thing I would change about this is maybe give the Zarbi a different sound effect🤔 Everything has a dream like quality to it in this story, I love really weird Surreal episodes of Who!😊
Side note: I may love this episode so much because growing up I had a bit of a love and fascination with bugs and insects! No seriously, when I was five or six I used to spend hours overturning rocks in my parents and grandparents backyard and picking up and looking at all of the bugs and insects! I used to let caterpillars, beetles, and slugs(I loved their little eye stalks) crawl up and down my arms and earth worms wrap themselves around my wrists! Sometimes I would have imaginary conversations with them and make up stories with them! I think I loved them because they reminded me of fairies a bit which I was also a bit obsessed with but anyways that’s a major reason why I like this episode so much 😊
Side side note: Why have they never brought back this planet for new Who? I would genuinely be curious to see what else they could do in this setting especially if it was set after what they mentioned “the great flower Forest regrows”! They could do so much with it with the budget and technology they have now and have other bug and insect people as well! Think of the giant flower forest they could have! The Menopta could fly around more and they could give the zarbi better sound effects. Also maybe they could add ladybug, earthworm, centipede and grasshopper people! There is a lot of creative things they could do to reinvent this setting in new Who and I think think kids watching would love it!😊

Last night I finished off 'The Happiness Patrol'. Not the best story in the world, but the last scene with Helen A certainly is something.
This evening, time allowing, I'll be watching all of 'Silver Nemesis'.

There is a lot of creative things they could do to reinvent this setting in new Who and I think think kids watching would love it!😊 It's possible that the idea might have crossed Russell T. Davies's mind back in the initial years of the revival, even if perhaps for only a moment. The Greater Animus gets a mention in the Ninth Doctor's annual as a casualty of the Last Great Time War. It's implied there that what the Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki faced here was an aspect of much larger entity. Something that existed perhaps on other worlds beyond Vortis. It's a great example of teamwork that final confrontation in the Carcinome. The Doctor protects Vicki against the Animus for as long as he can, Vicki holds out herself for as long as she can, buying time for Barbara to lead the attack force against the Carcinome and Ian to provide the critical moment of distraction that allows Barbara to kill the Animus. I really like it. The Doctor with Vicki gets co-opted into being an unwilling codebreaker by essentially bluffing more than he knows. Ian's quest for Barbara takes him beneath the surface of Vortis to the descendants of the original Menoptera. Barbara breaks out of a labour camp and assumes control of a shattered battalion of soldiers. It's all happening. Could be shrunk by an hour, perhaps, and turned into a four-parter but the story itself is rather good. It's an example of the show's early attempts to experiment with its format by doing something that shouldn't be possible on its television budget (and yet...). Vortis is a planet I'd like to tackle myself one day, once I've completely sussed out how to bring the "alienness" behind the setting wholly to life. Still working on that...

Do you think there are other kind of insect people on Vortis? I imagine there being ladybug, earthworm, grasshopper people🤔 I also have this idea where for some reason maybe some weird ritual or maybe they accidentally drink some weird potion or something, the Doctor and their companion start to turn into insect people themselves but then it doesn’t where off right away when they leave Vortis so they have to try to go about their lives as normal as possible with bug like features until it wears off sort of like a variation on Metamorphosis. I keep picturing it with 12 turning into a literal grey haired stick insect (which of course Clara would tease him about) he’d still play the guitar somehow though and Clara ends up with butterfly wings and suddenly starts craving nectar and then has to hide that she’s now part butterfly from her students😄
