After having my lovely signed copy of Earthshock (or "Erdstoss, since it is the German special edition, and yes, it includes the German dub) in hand, I realized I had not seen the audio commentary! Rectifying this now over the next few days. Also, the first of my ordered DVD sets arrived- the Black Guardian trilogy.

Would you recommend it to someone who is learning German? Like does it sound natural? Like for example, in Dutch dubbed tv (generally only kids shows get dubbed, everything else is subbed) sometimes sound really weird/unnatural. My Doctor Who dvd collection partially consists of the UK dvds and partially the German dvds, since I generally just get whichever is the cheapest for me. So, I might as well try to listen to the German dubs?

My Doctor Who dvd collection partially consists of the UK dvds and partially the German dvds, since I generally just get whichever is the cheapest for me. So, I might as well try to listen to the German dubs? I will be frank... I have never actually watched with the German dub. It feels wrong to me, my hair stands on end. Knowing the "real" thing, it feels completely wrong to me. I am one of the very few Germans who do not like dubbing.
That said, in general, German dubbing is now world leading. It is supposedly VERY good. I have been told by other German fans, that the German dubbing for Who is as good as it can be, and since it is all done by dedicated companies who are run by fans and who work closely together with the German Who community, it is very close to the original. Please note- for money saving reasons, there is only ONE actor who dubs ALL of the Doctors. He is the "German Doctor". He is a regular at German conventions. I have heard he does a good job. People love him.
Why do you not try out the German dubs and please let me know what you think?
I think if you know the English versions by heart, watching the German version might be a very good tool to learn the language. If you can get over the "feeling wrong" bit.
I am curious what you think!

The audio commentary to Earthshock is hilarious. These guys are on fire. I do not learn a lot about what went on in the actual episode, but the banter is brilliant. Makes me smile. Depending on how exhausted I am tonight, I might or might not start on the Black Guardian trilogy.

I really enjoyed the Black Guardian trilogy, Mardryn Undead and Enlightenment are definitely in my top 5 fifth Doctor adventures, I might go as far to say that there only bettered by Caves of Androsanani. Kinda and Earthshock I'd put in fourth and fifth place.

Just watched Face the Raven and Hell Bent back to back, when given free reign Capaldi really has no equal. Can you imagine how amazing he'd be dropped into other Doctors adventures, just a few I'd have loved;
Genesis of the Daleks, Arc in Space, the Deadly Assassin and Trial of a Timelord, not to detract from Tom and Colin, just Peter would work really well with those stories.

Not "today" today, but I'm here to talk about it now after being kinda wiped out after Christmas day.... So, to be festive, the day of (morning of, really, like at 4AM) I watched the best Doctor Who Christmas Special, A Christmas Carol. And, like, I don't have much to say about it behind just that -- it's the best. But me being me, some small thoughts did occur to me. - It's quite possibly the most Moffatty script Moffat ever wrote.
- It was inevitable that Doctor Who would try to do its own version of A Christmas Carol, and we are so incredibly fortunate that when it happened, Moffat was there to write it.
- Michael Gambon absolutely kills it as the elder Kazran. This is maybe an 8/10 story going just by the script, maybe even a 7/10. It's his performance alone that elevates it to a 10/10 for me. Especially that last scene. Oof.
- Speaking of, the "twist" with the "ghost of Christmas future?" Perfection. Exactly the kind of thing that made me, and so many others fall in love with Moffat's era of the show.
- If Big Finish ever gets to make some 11DAs with Matt Smith, I'd love to see them bring back Gambon to do a boxset set during this special.
I'd also hoped to be able to relisten to Fairytale of Salzberg that day, but couldn't quite manage it.

There's nothing I want to see more before I die than Capaldi coming back to do some Big Finish dramas. He's perfect. The quintessential Doctor. Would love to see him in some 3rd Doctor-style stories someday.

On Christmas Day I watched 'The Abomnible Snowmen', because it's the new animation &, unlike last year's (Underworld) there's actually snow in this one...
Yes, yes I did forget that it's set in a Buddhist monastery.

The audio medium suits his era really well, all those great speeches and grumpy comebacks, also creepy concepts like Listen could utilise sound really well. Capaldi on audio would be an instant bundle pre order from me. I'd also dearly love Stephen Moffat to write for Big Finish. Also good call on the Christmas Carol, it's my favourite Xmas Special, I rewatch every Xmas. I also love Last Christmas, Twice upon a time and the Snowmen.

Re-watching the 5-ish Doctors Reboot. Needed a fun pick me up. Still as wonderful as ever.
Fun fact- on the German DVD release (for NuWho, these are cheaper for me to get, it is Classic that is an issue over here) the 5-ish Doctors reboot is NOT on the anniversary DVDs. It is on the "Extras" DVD of Series 8. And has non-removeable German subtitles plastered all over it. I have all of NuWho on Streaming, but without internet, I had to go looking where this actually was. I knew I had it somewhere. Took me a while. German DVD releases are a bit weird. I also have "Night of the Doctor" twice- it is on the German 50th DVD, it is also on the German 8th Doctor movie release.

Started on Mawdryn Undead. This is quite good! I did not expect such edge of seat entertainment! And OMG, there certainly is quite horrific gruesome nightmare fuel in this. As a kid, I certainly would have been terrified and slept badly.
And there is some serious acting going on.
I am impressed.

I got Peter Davison's first season for Christmas so I am watching Four to Doomsday. It's not bad. But I do feel like the story really struggles to sustain momentum over four parts. It has a lot of really interesting ideas but there's also a lot of padding to fill out the runtime.

Trying to make my way through Terminus. This is like treacle. It really isn't very good, is it? Basically one of the worst Doctor Who corridor episodes ever. I am now half-way though, and it feels like they just walked/ ran along corridors or crawled through some ducts. And then there is this disease/ drug dealer story which reminds me a lot of that early TNG episode. Honestly, I am tempted to just give up and just watch again just with the commentary, in the hope that that will be more entertaining. A HUGE step down after Mawdryn Undead. And yes, I did read up about it that it had issues and it was a troubled production.... it shows.

Always thought the first episode is one of the creepiest but it does go downhill a bit.The target adaption works well though.

Always thought the first episode is one of the creepiest but it does go downhill a bit.The target adaption works well though. Same here. That first episode promised great things, and the writer inspired confidence. Sadly, the rest of the story was just turgid - I feel the same way about The Space Museum. A terrific premise, great first episode, and then ... a bit of a chore.
I'm about to watch Behind the Sofa - The Green Death. I hope someone's bought Katy Manning a box of tissues.

Right, so now I am watching Terminus with the commentary. And the entertainment factor improved a lot. Alone the commentary during Nyssa stripping off her scant clothes. The question pops up as to WHY? Peter: "It is because I put in a request." And Sarah sets him straight right away.

One of the many things I love about Big Finish is how they've made a virtue out of the real-life relationship enjoyed by Peter, Janet and Sarah (and Mark and Matthew, come to that). The playful banter and put-downs that make the commentaries so enjoyable wasn't always evident on screen, but is always a joy to hear. I love 'em!
