Right, so now I am watching Terminus with the commentary. And the entertainment factor improved a lot. Alone the commentary during Nyssa stripping off her scant clothes. The question pops up as to WHY? Peter: "It is because I put in a request." And Sarah sets him straight right away. One of the many things I love about Big Finish is how they've made a virtue out of the real-life relationship enjoyed by Peter, Janet and Sarah (and Mark and Matthew, come to that). The playful banter and put-downs that make the commentaries so enjoyable wasn't always evident on screen, but is always a joy to hear. I love 'em! I just listened to Kingdom of Lies, and you can just hear how much fun they all have playing all the banter and this game of deceit against each other. I never really cared for them until I saw them (the whole team, Peter, Mark, Matthew, Sarah and Janet) live on stage at a convention and OMG, it was a sight to behold.

Trying to make my way through Terminus. This is like treacle. It really isn't very good, is it? Basically one of the worst Doctor Who corridor episodes ever. I am now half-way though, and it feels like they just walked/ ran along corridors or crawled through some ducts. And then there is this disease/ drug dealer story which reminds me a lot of that early TNG episode. Honestly, I am tempted to just give up and just watch again just with the commentary, in the hope that that will be more entertaining. A HUGE step down after Mawdryn Undead. And yes, I did read up about it that it had issues and it was a troubled production.... it shows. I love Mawdryn Undead and Enlightenment, hope you have fun with the final part of the Black Guardian trilogy. My old DVD has the original Enlightenment and a shorter movie length cut, I much preferred the original.

Watching Kinda, which is certainly creative. I'm mostly struck by how easily Peter Davison settled into the role. He grew into it right away.

Making my way through Enlightenment. OMG, this so so much better than Terminus. The Eternals are interesting characters, there is a sense of dread, the special effects are quite nice (these sailing ships in space are just such a quirky Who idea!). Quite a good story with a bit of pace and with some nice philosophical questions to ponder over. I like it so far.

I actually think the set design of Kinda works well. I know critics at the time felt otherwise but the low budget helps with the remote outpost concept.

Now starting the audio commentary to Enlightenment. Wow, I did not realize (because not reading the credits) that this had a female writer and a female director. Interesting. And Peter is totally right, the atmospheric low lighting in the Tardis at the start looks sooooo much better.

The Power of the Doctor again.
I'd forgotten how amazing it is to see Janet Fielding and Sophie Aldred in the opening credits. I hadn't forgotten, however, that this is quite simply a movie-length rollercoaster that holds the attention of this old codger. Doesn't matter how many times I watch this, I love it unreservedly always.

Guilty pleasure? Or maybe we are too easy to please?

Oh, I am much happier being too easy to please! But, really, having got to the end, I love it all over again.
'Introducing David Tennant as The Doctor' indeed!
"The blossomiest blossom."

Just finished Trial of a Time Lord. Am I crazy for really enjoying it?
On to Time and the Rani. So far, meh.
I just can't believe I'm on the last Doctor of the classic show! Started with Unearthly Child over like 2 years ago, now almost done!

Started with Unearthly Child over like 2 years ago, now almost done! I don't mind trial, but I tend to grade it on a curve. Mysterious Planet is great, Mindwarp is good for Colin's era, but ok in the larger scale of Who, I don't care for Vervoids, but I didn't mind the recut from the bluray set, I'll have to revisit it in a month or two. Ultimate Foe is quite literally a tale of two halves Overall, I find it flawed, but enjoyable, the first half moreso.

Inferno, which brings to an end a very gritty series of Doctor Who. It was never quite the same way again.

It's always a pleasure to revisit Logopolis (which is what I've done), but there's no denying it is, in places, a cheap looking production. The climactic scenes are especially visually unconvincing. Even with the recent blu-ray release and additional effects, it never looks anything less than studio bound. The story was the last in a mammoth 28 week series - my favourite, by some way - and the cash was dwindling; it would have been great if the BBC, to mark the passing of the Fourth Doctor, had given JNT a few extra quid to record those memorable scenes on film, or give them a bit of extra time - or something.
It always amazes me when the writer and script editor CHB chastises Tom Baker's performance where he fails to make eye-contact with Anthony Ainley's Master. It amazes me because the two Time Lords are enemies, deadly enemies, and forging an alliance is against everything The Doctor stands for. So he wouldn't look at him!
The thing about Logopolis, and this can apply to most of Classic Who to me, is that, regarding the limitations of the condemned-to-video visuals - it doesn't matter one bit! On the other channel, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, which was beating Doctor Who in the ratings, had excellent visuals. A bit disco, but that was all part of the fun, so they tell me. Chances are you wouldn't remember much about the episode you'd just seen ten minutes after the final credits had rolled. Doctor Who, by comparison, especially when waving goodbye to the longest running Doctor, had understated emotional investment. Here was a hero who was actually dying - and we knew that because it had been all over the media. When JNT dictated that they run clips of all Number Four's allies and enemies - something else Bidmead didn't like - the tears flowed, at least they did in my house. Seconds later, an uncertain Peter Davison sat up, swamped in burgundy, and we knew that there was a future for the Doctor after all!
The genius of Doctor Who, and Christopher H Bidmead, is that no-one is bigger than the show. I remember wondering how they'd ever conjure up something 'big' enough to take down the formidable Fourth Doctor, who had bounded free of every predicament he had been in. That he should meet his doom - and save the universe - by pulling out a plug, proves to me once again, that Doctor Who transcends budget constraints, tanscends everything!

Watched "The Power of the Doctor".
That is quite a dose of appearances and call-backs.

The Green Death, getting ready for The Return of Jo Jones next month.
The Maggots are still really effective 50 years later, the giant fly less so.
This is one of the first Doctor Who serials I watched as a child in the early 90s.
The Doctor driving off alone at the end is really sad despite Jo's ridiculously rushed engagement.
Still one favs though.

Re-watching Black Orchid. I still love it. Especially the costumes! Such a change of pace. When I am finished, I will watch it again- with commentary on! Looking forward to it.
