Timelash is one to avoid. Some people think that, anyway. I didn't think it was so bad. But if you are limiting what you watch, there are better ones.

The set is boring, robot is awful, script is poor, HG Wells is annoying and Paul Darrow is way over the top.

For me, I like to not just watch the best of the best of a series when watching, but as well as when it doesn't succeed as I find interesting.

I'm a completist. I've tried to watch everything I can get access to.

One thing I'd mention, is that it can help in your appreciation for Classic Who if you don't watch the stories straight through but watch one episode at a time as they were intended. I remember how in the early 80s, Channel 6 PBS in Denver had them on Monday-Friday early in the evening, one episode per day. I saw all the 4th and most of the 3rd Doctor stories that way. They also showed a full story on Sunday mornings, and the first couple of years, still split into individual episodes instead of edited together and emasculating the cliffhangers.
There was a mention of Mawdryn Undead for the 5th Doctor early in this thread, and that may be my favorite from the 5th Doctor's era. But I'm not sure if I'd make it the first 5th Doctor story I'd have someone watch. Same goes for Caves of Androzani, it may be the best final-story for any Doctor. As such, I don't think it should be the first story someone watches for Five.

I tried to watch Caves before I had seen ANY classic Who and I just couldn't get into it. Then about a year later I started to watch it in order from An Unearthly Child as best as I could. When I got to Caves I thought it was one of the best pieces of 80's television I had seen.
