Well, every other Who spinoff has had a major character from Doctor Who as a main character. Personally, Coal Hill School isn't enough of a connection to get me super excited. I'm sure I'll still watch it, but I fear that it may just be a standard school sci-fi show with little connection to Doctor Who. At present, I'm along the same lines of thinking about this spin-off not being Doctor Who universe enough for me. However, Steven Moffat does have 1 more season of Doctor Who under his stewardship. Might Moffat canon establish some of the new Class characters in an upcoming episode of Doctor Who? Sadly, while an apperance isn't out of the question, Class is going out this year.

My thoughts are clearly conjecture at this point, but it would be an innovative way of presenting a spin-off in reverse order. By having Katherine Kelly make her official appearance in the Doctor Who main program after Class has aired its first season. You'll certainly see a spike in that debut show's DVD sales (or whatever) if that does indeed happen. As you have already mentioned Michael, in all probability there's going to be some kind of Doctor Who universe bolstering of Class.

There are over 50 years worth of actors involved with Who. There must be tons who would be willing to do a spinoff. If they don't want comparisons with Doctor Who, they shouldn't make it a spinoff. But very few who are that well-known to a large portion of the revival audience, particularly the target audience for Class. They can always do what they did with Sarah Jane, and reintroduce the character to a new audience on Doctor Who, before making the spinoff.

While they could do that with another children or adult spin off, I'm not sure if teenagers (even fans of the original series) would be that receptive. For many, I'd wager, the show has to be about them and their lives - and having an adult former companion figure in the narrative might diminish that significantly or at worst seen as patronising for the issues the show is set to explore. It does make me wonder what role Katherine Kelly will take on. Perhaps, an uneasy ally figure or one cloaked in mystery whose intentions are unclear?

But, if the character has connections to The Doctor, perhaps a 'secret origin' type affair during the school holidays - with The Doctor needing her again - and flashbacks over the course of the episode revealing their history together, away from the main thrust of Class to keep things relevant for that audience and to tie-in to the inevitable themes of adolesence reliasing that adults are failable and human. With a show like Class, I think it's probably better to keep the narrative going forward.

It's possible that a Doctor Who connection was needed to launch the show, even with Ness's name, particularly in the BBC's current state ( Wizards Vs Aliens was most likely only comissioned in light of The Sarah Jane Adventures popularity). But, it's also important to rememnber that right now The Doctor is a very failable figure and that we're still running off from Hell's Bent, so I don't think it's that difficult for Class's audience to be tapped into and to feel valid and recgonised.

I think this is an amusing reference to the way that certain fans have, in recent years, announced confidently that a new character (particularly Clara) will actually turn out to be Susan, or the Rani (particularly Rani), or Paul McGann.
