Katherine Kelly is a great choice but the show still needs a major character from the main series to appear in order for it to be a Doctor Who spinoff IMO. Ian Chesterton cameo please.

While I'm sure they'll be nods and connections to the greater Doctor Who universe, Class needs to establish itself on it's own terms first. I do think an apperance from Ian is inevitable, though

I'm intrigued by this series. I can't tell this far out if I should be excited or not, but I do think it's a good opportunity to catch the audience that Sarah Jane Adventures was aimed at.
Naturally, as a Who fan I'm waiting with great anticipation to hear what crossover characters or monsters might appear, though I agree it should stand on it's own first before starting to do guest appearances (Except for Ian, who seems like he would naturally be on hand from the start.)

As much as I'd like to see William Russell play Ian for this, I think the most we'll get is a brief cameo and one or two lines if we're lucky. He is getting on in years and he can't be in the peak of health, so imagine the strain of being on TV now.

It's actually looks to be more teenage bent then Sarah Jane Adventures. Wizards Vs Aliens has also filled in that nieche nicely.

(Those Early Adventures were recorded some time ago - before the Companion Chronicles boxset was.) I think - as lovely as it would be and as well-meaning as these requests are - people aren't being very practical/realistic in their thinking.

Personally, Coal Hill School isn't enough of a connection to get me super excited. I'm sure I'll still watch it, but I fear that it may just be a standard school sci-fi show with little connection to Doctor Who.

At present, I'm along the same lines of thinking about this spin-off not being Doctor Who universe enough for me. However, Steven Moffat does have 1 more season of Doctor Who under his stewardship. Might Moffat canon establish some of the new Class characters in an upcoming episode of Doctor Who? I wonder if being in a future episode of Doctor Who would have been a Class sign up carrot for Katherine Kelly.

If Moffat was going to do that, it would have made more sense back when Clara was still travelling with him. We'll see what happens though.

LOL if Katherine Kelly proves to be the DW series 10 new companion. Then Class truly would be Doctor Who enough...

I think that would be the best way forward for them if they're not going to include any major characters from the main series. It would be a nice twist for the future companion to get a spinoff before she appears as companion in the main show.

There aren't that many actors avaliable involved in Who to take part in a spin off, though. However, given the budget the show has, I think it's imperative that it establishes itself as it's own thing to avoid too much comparsion with it's bigger budget parent program. Sarah Jane Adventures bolsted up it's Who connections in a big way and I'm sure Class will do the same in time.

There must be tons who would be willing to do a spinoff. If they don't want comparisons with Doctor Who, they shouldn't make it a spinoff.

But very few who are that well-known to a large portion of the revival audience, particularly the target audience for Class.
