Now that BF have "An available direct from BF for at least 2 months before other retailers" policy on everything will you pre-order/ buy more direct from BF or wait the extra month or more if it dose work out cheaper from another retailer.

Since I went back to work after my injury I've listened to less and less BF on release. I found I was listening to things because they were new and not because I was excited for them or in the mood for audio. So now I'm building a backlog and waiting till I really want to listen, till I'm enthused, before doing so.
With that in mind I am now more conscious of third party prices though I try and buy EVERYTHING I really want to give support to BF without Amazon or Ebay taking a slice. So War Doctor? BF direct every time. Sherlock Holmes? Well, weeks after the last set I got it half price from a seller on Amazon. I would rather use my limited funds to support the ranges I wouldn't want to be without - DS, some Who etc - as buying everything direct is just not feasible. I don't think prices are too high or anything but I'm also, as anyone who has me on FB knows, a big film fan and I spend loads on blurays so I can't be as liberal with the cash as I'd like to be with BF.
I like the exclusivity period idea and hope it works well for BF and drives more fans to them direct. I would like more of the old "subscribers get more" model though especially on ranges like the 4DAs where there's little incentive to buy direct. The odd extended extra or Tom interview for people who sub wouldn't go amiss.

my feeling is that nothing should be published until it available on general release, otherwise it seems a bit un fair on the poor old comic shops and general retailer.
it's going to make the ebay market have an advantage too.
exclusivity is all well and good if it really is exclusive, but this is 6 weeks tops and just feels a bit alienating to retailers and purchasers and possibly opens the door a little bit wider for the torrenters too!
for me though I don't care, as I now only buy downloads and BF is the only place I can get them.

Surely it could be argued that discussion and reviews beforehand would create demand/interest and actually boost sales once it goes on general release.
Someone might be undecided about - and unable to afford the BF price of - (choosing a product at random) the Steed and Mrs Peel audios. And then the reviews encourage them to buy it - and they still need the cheapest option so the retailer gets a sale that, were it not for the early reviews, they wouldn't get.

For 95% of my BF purchases I purchase direct from Big Finish. Everything else represents releases or ranges I don't feel like I "have to have" right away or things I want to try out, so I play the waiting games as it is. If this policy drives more business to them directly, then I don't see a downside. What I do think they need to do is make the online experience for all these potential new customers, as well as is long time supporters, more intuitive and more functional. Which really means a complete overhaul of their web site. I do think there have patches & fixes in the web site over the past couple of years that has made it better but there is still a lot of work to be done.

Whenever I hear the old "Subscribers get more", I always tack on....in my best Nick voice....."But not as much as they used to." |

I doubt it will make any significant change at all, the most committed fans already purchase direct for the most part of the less committed get them when, where and when appropriate for themselves.
It will change the behaviour of a small number of people, but it seems to me that the effects will be a mixed bag, both positive and negative.
It might foster the feeling of being an "insider", someone "in the know" for some people, but I can also see it alienating some, I would have thought actually delivering on "subscribers get more" rather than constantly eroding it would be a better way to foster that feeling.

I only tend to buy away from BF, if they cd's aren't available from the site anymore

I stagger my reviews but always make them available on you tube first.
Eg. Thus week I will have 5 new podcasts on YouTube but the actual podcast in audio for is on a weekly/twice weekly scedule.
Thus allowing the best of all world's.
All get mentioned on the twitter feeds

All get mentioned on the twitter feeds But the reviews on the site are pretty pointless they choose what they want to include, if they were independent and in full, including the good & the bad I might take notice. I find it a bit like the movie review quotes, on below par movie posters, I know BF do excellent stuff and trust them buf if I was hovering those quotes would put me off. for me if I hear a review for film, tv, audio, comic, etc I don't think oh I will look for that in a months time. 6 weeks I will have forgotten about it! And unless I read another review, I am afraid I won't buy it. I don't think I am alone on this. just my opinion |

I only buy direct from BF anyway (I tend to buy stories mostly at pre-order or sale price, and although I'm mostly a CD only customer I like having the security of a Download back up copy and supporting BF directly), so this policy won't effect me at all.

And from this week BF has started giving more guidance on when reviews are embargoed until. I think the policy on what gets on the site is still emerging and they don't like to stick to the same few names. Paul Magrs did his own list for Peterloo as well

People find the products wherever they can, rhat doesn't change the validity of the review. I could understand it causing confusion if a title was only available to subscribers, but the Big Finish website isn't exactly hard to find. |

Well i have a limited amount of money to spend on big finish and so it does affect me a bit yes although i always try to buy directly from bf anyway and normally do about 70% of the time so it doesnt affect me massively.

I don't believe there is much merit arguing that putting out reviews before something is available to the general public should be stopped, or is in anyway an issue. For years reviews of albums, movies, television, books and even theatre have been published before anyone has a chance to read/view/listen to a product.
Granted in this day and age it can be difficult to avoid spoilers - but with a little effort one can avoid most. Don't go to the entertainment sites, skip the podcast, threaten friends with bodily harm if they try telling you about it - that will cut down on the chances of something being spoiled.
As for BF holding products exclusively for a period before allowing 3rd party retailers access, I think that is a prudent policy and one which does likely help their bottom line, while also allowing direct buyers a little bonus.
