Here - a day late - is this week's Quentin Listenthru story thread.
As the saying goes, all’s fair in love and war.”
Immortal wanderer Quentin Collins has done his best to stay on the sidelines of the Second World War, but now he's been recruited by the British Secret Service. His mission: to infiltrate the castle of Professor Moloch in the heart of the Black Forest.
For the Third Reich is hiding a dark secret – Moloch has been dabbling in the occult, and he's reached out to some very dark forces indeed.
Will Quentin be able to stop him? And does dashing agent Sally Green have a score of her own to settle?
Written by Jonathan Morris Directed by Darren Gross
Starring David Selby as Quentin Collins and Terry Molloy as Doctor Moloch with Fay Masterson as Sally Green.

A good story, with an exciting adventure, characters with ambiguous motives, death, destruction, spies, guns, monsters and a mad scientist played by Terry Malloy. (And really, there aren't that many people that do mad scientist better than Terry Malloy.) I don't know why this story doesn't grab me as much as many of the others. I like it, but I don't love it as it seems that I should. Maybe it's because I've already heard the "torture the werewolf" story in The Skin Walkers, or maybe it's just that Quentin as James Bond just doesn't work all that well for me, but something seemed to miss the mark in my mind.

I think I will try to give this a listen if I can get to it. It's obviously been too long since I've heard it, since last time I hadn't yet figured out who Terry Molloy was. I'm sure it will deepen my appreciation for the story somewhat knowing now. This probably isn't on my top DS audios list I guess because somehow, I don't think anything that happened in the story actually surprised me, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and was glad to see the range try something different like this.
Personally I fancy the idea of Quentin as spy or secret agent, I guess if nothing else in contrast to later in the OS where it seems like the writers weren't quite sure what to do with Quentin. David Selby easily has the requisite charisma, and I think it would make for an interesting predicament to have a secret agent who can't be killed but is prone to eternal confinement and torture if captured. I think it might have made for many interesting stories since being Dark Shadows, naturally Quentin's missions would involve the supernatural.

I actually really liked this one but maybe I just like stories set in this time period. And I thought Terry Molloy was a great villain. Well of course we know he can play a great villain but this role was quite a bit different from Davros I thought.
Okay some of the twists about Sally I saw a mile away (but not all of them) and I was actually surprised she went off with Quentin in the end. I wonder if anything came of their adventures together.
I also really like Quentin as a secret agent...but I don't see him as a James Bond type of agent at all. He has more of the Bogart type to him. So definitely a secret agent with more of a hard edge.

I think Kim edited my post rather than replied. Woops you are right I did. That was completely by accident. and this was my original reply: Ah cool well I would have really loved to see that on stage but audio wise he doesn't remind me of Bogart. Technically speaking Selby doesn't really either. Bogart was one of a kind.

Quentin as a spy would be an interesting few stories. He even mentions to Jamison in 1897 that he was a spy in Egypt. While it might have been a lie, it would be interesting to see that be true.
I do hope that they can follow up on Sally Von Green and Quentin Collins' quest to find Doctor Subotzky. While Quentin still has his immortality intact in later stories, there is still a story there. I could almost imagine an outcome where there's only enough for one of them and Quentin is gallant is gives it to Sally to let her die for good. Plus Dr. Moloch doesn't actually die at the end. I could see him coming back as some sort of mixed-up monster.

So...doing a little catch-up. I listened last night but didn't have time to post until tonight. Some may have seen my recent Facebook posts about my poor mom. She's having a tough time of it lately and some serious age-related health issues so I've understandably fallen a bit behind on just about everything.
I think I liked this story more this time around. I never disliked it, but Nazi/double agent spy stuff is not my thing. But, from a purely supernatural standpoint, it is quite good and the caged creatures in the menagerie are more pitiful than scary. The real monster here is Dr. Moloch and Terry Molloy chews up the scenery for lunch!
I also loved the castle locale....reminded me of Castle Dracula in the Carpathians. Sally Green is a fun Pussy Galore to Quentin's 007. And the ending is very Bond-ish without the typical roll in the hay...but we can assume they'll roll yet!
This storyline here reminded me of the Dark Shadows Gold Key comics style, or maybe the Marilyn Ross DS novels. Mad scientist, remote locale, werewolf anti-hero. In retrospect, and with this repeated listen, I think it fits the DS mold quite nicely. Now, onto one of my Quentin faves--The Haunted Refrain.
