I'm sure there was a time when it was company policy not to announce something until it had been recorded, wasn't there?

I'm sure there was a time when it was company policy not to announce something until it had been recorded, wasn't there? And that's still the general policy which is why I still haven't ordered it until I know for sure that its been in studio.

Well we can certainly say that BF avoids responding to questions about what is happening with this release. Not that I expected a response, but it would be nice if they were to reply - sadly more often than not their response to anything potentially negative in the head-in-sand approch, hoping people will forget and move in. Communicate with your customers and they will continue to support you with pre-orders and by taking chances on new, untested products - the silent treatment leads to unhappy customers and that is never good for a small company.
Explain why it has been delayed and what is being done to get it produced - it really isn’t that hard, or that much to ask.

Graceless Series 4 also got delayed due to Simon Guerrier taking a while with the scripts. IIRC it was renewed after the Worlds of Big Finish release.

This is pretty much why I refuse to pre order anything.

This is pretty much why I refuse to pre order anything. To be fair, this is a pretty rare exception. That said, I do think these kind of instances are where Big Finish will stumble from a customer service point of view. Things will happen. Talk to your subscribers.

As jasonward said on another thread a few months ago bf are very bad at handling bad news. They tend to stick their head in the sand and say nothing for too long a time.

Plus there was never any official statement about the Jackie Tyler Short Trips being postponed. It was only during the podcast we found it it was due to technical difficulties in post-production (and given how many people have stopped listening due to the waffling tangents, that may have been missed by them), but that was months ago and we've had no update. They still say Release Date TBC. Release months of November and December haven't been locked in yet, are just a formality at this point.

Eh, I have a feeling that's beyond Big Finish's control, though. I think playing within the Tenth Doctor era is fine, but progressing elements from it as something else enterily and Chibnall probably wants all eyes on the relaunch and it might have given Big Finish some time to re-examine the Jackie Short Trips.

Unless he was planning to use Jackie or the Meta-Doctor, I don't see how Chibnall could have any concerns over it. He never wrote for either character (RTD was the only one to write for the Meta-Doctor until Joseph Lidster penned these stories, since Meta-Doc was only in one episode), and since Journey's End Pete's World has been it's own separate thing that no one has done anything with until now. There was talk of the Rose Tyler: Defender of the Earth spin-off, but that never led to anything serious. Given how little we know about the upcoming season, it's possible Chibnall may be tapping into Pete's World, but it's far from confirmed. It's been nearly ten years since we last saw Jackie chronologically (she was in 2005 at the end of End of Time Part 2, and has had a few Big Finish stories set during series 1 and 2), as well as the Meta-Doctor. Plus, these are the only New Series related releases so far to be delayed. There were trailers up that have since been taken down, which means some of the sound design and music had to have been done given the style of the Short Trips trailers. I know the Erasure trailer had to be done quickly because it was brought forward two months with no warning.

Nick is a busy man and as a co-executive producer, he has his hands in EVERYTHING Big Finish does and Big Finish has been expanding the last few years and it takes a lot to nuture the personal creative avenues of Big Finish, as well as being a touring actor (which he might see as cleansing the palate for Big Finish), reinventing pop culture icons more often then not in Cardiff and on top of that, he's a Father!
Big Finish has always had an extensive output for a small company and with the opportunity to go onwards into the revival, it's understandable some projects got put on the backburner. I can't blame Big Finish for pirtorising the Big Finish Originals, something I'd longed hoped for Big Finish, not just to see the talents of Big Finish on a blank canvas, but also that despite having the favour of the showrunner, there are bigger forces surrounding the Doctor Who licencise over yet (admittingly said to be bold and distinct) another adapation of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Things can change. I imagine that revival releases recording dates have been to both very tight and loose, as well, so it's understandable this release has been delayed a bit in light of other releases.

This was promised two years ago, with nothing new to show for it. I'd forgive Big Finish for shelving the project until a solid deadline can be met, and taking down the product page until a release is more tangible. For whatever reason, at this point we don't know if there's been any development (Nick jokingly commenting about next year, year after that implies it's not a priority), and a solid release date that is expected to be met would be hugely welcome before I put in any pre-order. It's very rare Big Finish drop the ball like this, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's forgotten at Big Finish towers.

There's a lot of intrest in Rose post-Journey's End, though and for many, The Doctor and Rose's love story IS Doctor Who. It's highly possible Chibnall probably didn't want anything to detract from his relaunch, particularly with Thirteen. It was refered to in-podcast that the stories have also undergone somewhat of an 'exciting' overhaul as well, so it's understandable Big Finish didn't want to advertise their previous take and mislead listeners. Doesn't neccessairly mean we're going to see Pete's World, though.
Also, you might want to re-read my post....I said progressing elements from the Tenth Doctor era which is different from playing within it.

The fact remains there are customers who spent their money to preorder this over two years. Changing priorities are fine and understandable but how does that prevent BF from providing a statement to their customers ? As it has been noted, BF is not good at addressing or even acknowledging bad news. Nick being busy has nothing to do with that.

Well, it defiently hasn't been forgotten because Nick Briggs has talked about it The release was been placed as TBA initially (and when given a date, was acknoweldged by Nick as a website error) and I imagine it was just a slip up. A LOT has happened in those two years, the launch of the revival releases for one and Nick talked about how despite the actors their williginess, there had been difficulty with booking the actors involved in the original production. The H.G. Wells adaptions and the Shakespeare adapations were released under the Big Finish Classics banner were released (mostly) month after month last year, so it's not as if doing classic adapations wasn't pirtorised. Add the complications for other ranges, especially Doctor Who and booking revival actors, Aliens Among Us, etc, the delays aren't that suprising. With any other company, I'd defiently take more of an issue, but this release seems to have affected by a lot more external issues then Big Finish could reasonably deal with. For the sheer quality (especially given their extensive releases) of Big Finish, honestly, I could forgive anything. I don't think it should have been put up for pre-order, but I believe that Big Finish honestly believed that this production wasn't going to be as difficult as it was.

That's what happened with Charlotte Pollard. That had been in the works starting 2009, and by the time it finally appeared in 2014, Matt Fitton and Andrew Smith were writing it. Fast forward to 2017 and series 2 finally appears written by Nick Briggs, and it ends on a left field cliffhanger with no indication of when series 3 will be released, delegated to another writer. It's not the first time Nick has passed a project on to another writer, James Swallow took on Cyberman 2.

Where actor availability is an issue, announcements are usually saved for when recording is done. That way the article can be plumped up with cast names and photos from the recording. It also cuts the variables down to post-production. It also provides Nick an opportunity to grab interviews he can run in the podcast.

Nick being a busy man doesn't excuse taking people's money for a project two years ago, not producing it, then joking about doing it in a year or two. You take the money, you do the work of refund it. Or better yet, don't take money until the behind the scenes stuff is finalized.

It's not just an adapation of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde, though - it's an adapation of Nick's distinctive stageplay. .It's very much his project.

Well then, wait for schedules to line up, do the recording and then announce it. Big Finish are no strangers to juggling actor availability or waiting for the window to open up where certain actors are able to come in, like with David Tennant.
