Where are the thread and first posts for this week's (and I believe, final) Quentin group listen? Oh wait...I guess I just answered my own question, for here it is!
Anxious to give this a listen again because I've only heard it once. And with a crossover from Dorian Gray himself, it goes nicely along with the Dorian group listen that some of us are participating in.
Bobod, hope I'm not stepping on your toes here! I just kept looking, and not seeing one, I started thinking I might be a week ahead and everyone was still on The Haunted Refrain!

Bobod, hope I'm not stepping on your toes here! Not remotely, Tracy, I've been meaning to set it up all week, but I've not got round to it. I'm still iPod-less. (Well actually I have got it back... but it hasn't been repaired so it'll have to go back again.)

I am going to try to get to this one this week but since it's 2 hours it may wait till next week. Looking forward to it though besides Dorian's cameo I loved the Eternal Actress and more Nev Fountain is always a good thing.

This one just floored me. I don't know what I was expecting, but this sure wasn't it. Every surprise "got" me ( except for the feeling that something wasn't quite right with every single person in it.). At first I really didn't like it very much, but then I'd get deeper and deeper into it and it would get better and better. I had a hard time believing that Quentin was such a sucker for "Amanda". He's usually too cynical and good at spotting the lies. The fact that he went to Dorian for advice shows just how desperate he was. By the end I was completely drawn in and really felt the tension. I felt terrible for Norman, though. He ended up being quite the hero.

This one just goes to show how well BF can take a fresh approach to an established range and create some kind of new magic. They did it with The Crimson Pearl, Beyond the Grave, House by the Sea, Tony & Cassandra, Bloodlust, and others....and this one too. The "show within a show" approach somehow works here, and this has a very different feel yet is very much the DS we love!
Amanda/Olivia's bitchy diva persona ("Why can't artists just PAINT anymore???"), the supporting players with all their little quirks, Quentin's return....as elkawho says, "something wasn't quite right with every person in it." Add to that the very weird set construction that recreates Collinwood down to the last detail (but yet still somehow, not quite right....)
I love it. It makes me uncomfortable, uneasy, and a little anxious. It's like playing a 45 rpm record at 33 1/3 rpm speed. You still know what you're hearing...its identifiable, but just a little "off."

The Darkest Shadow is a wonderful audio and well worth the wait. It was originally supposed to come out with the audio batch previously, but the extra time allowed Big Finish to get the magic just right. While the hour-long audios do quite well, there is something to be said for the occasional story allowed a little more time to develop. One of my favorite parts is how effectively we are able to distinguish between the Donna McKechnie's two roles. Certainly a testament to her acting abilities as well as the magic that goes on behind the recordings. The ending was a perfect way to tie in another fantastic audio. I wonder where Dorcas is nowadays...
