OK, so this is going to be a request for help and information.
First some background about me for the technically minded. I used to be a professional programmer, cutting my teeth on BBC Basic, dabbling in C, Quick Basic and few others before starting a career as an XBase (DBase, Foxpro, Clipper etc) bod, and after about 8 years doing that, moving on Transact SQL, whilst again dabbling in HTML, Javascript, Visual Basic, PHP etc, however I last did any serious programming more than 10 years ago, and due to my specialising in database's the whole oops/object revolution was rarely more than something interesting other people did.
I have two itches I really want to scratch
The first being my BF downloads, the playing and management of them. Put very simply I want a program that can do all that for me (I do have quite a lot of details of exactly how I want that to work, but that is for another time).
The second itch, I really would like to learn the language Scala, functional programming really appeals to me, as in truth, I actually spent many an hour trying to get my xBase creations to work in that manner anyway and yeah... also Scala because should I ever become somewhat expert it will also allow me to write Minecraft mods.
Now I thought I would start with something that would have been trivial for me back in the day, take the RSS feed BF provide for my account and parse into a database so that it can be sorted, manipulated etc... and indeed in these days of XML I reckon this task for those in the know should be even easier than it ever was.
But not for me it would seem, I have downloaded a tool called BaseX and expected that I would be able to load the BF RSS feed (RSS is a subset of XML right?) into BaseX and be able to run queries right away... but no... I get a whole host of errors...
So, to my request, it's a long shot I know, I'm not expecting many here to be experienced in Scala and/or XML and RSS, but for those that may be, anyone have an general pointers for me? A good place to start with understanding what I need to do to parse RSS? Or just general advice on learning Scala? Or really anything you think maybe relevant to my project.
BTW, peeps, this is a learning project for me, and if people want to help bring it to life at any stage they are welcome to contribute in anyway they/you wish, but I make no promises (at the moment at least) that this project will ever amount to anything beyond this post and a collection of files on my hard drive.
FYI I run Linux/Ubuntu.
